why do you think your imei number could be in danger in these hands? the only insecure issue with imei i see, that somebody "steals" my imei for his phone, so i would not be able to register into network with my phone ... and for this i believe this site.
Here is an xample of what someone can do with this sort of info. Yes I know this incident involved landlines, but its not inconcieveable that a mobile could be used in the same way.
@ECS
Good idea, only the other thread seems to have died and THIS ONE was the original anyway.

this's what i was talking about ... someone changes imei of his phone and use your one and as two phones with the same imei can't be registered in one network, one phone of these 2 phones fails to operate ... that's all

The sim card also is read by the imei number....

the simcard is not in anyway locked to the IMEI number, since you can switch sim card in your phone and still use it....

what i know nothing
sim card is identified on gsm network by imsi (international mobile subscriber identity) number and that's something completely different than imei.

correct
two ways to identify a user on a network:
IMEI number - the identification of the mobile device
IMSI number - the identification of the subscriber... consists of countrycode (MCC), networkcode (MNC) and the subscriber number (MSIN)

Errrrr im not sure if im allowed to say, but with an IMEI number 1 can get the number u using and with your number 1 can get all you account info....
prepaid to but its more dificult, contract verrrry easy!!
1 can lock it very easily....
1 can tell where bout you are to 50m radius
remember a phones serial number is all a SP has on what phone was given to you.... they use it for everything!!!! a sim can be traced just like an IMEI.... you put your sim in another phone they will know whats the IMEI of the phone you just put that card into!!!!
etc
etc.......................
