@jah,kinda strange that u say that SONYERICSSON is a ^relatively small^ company.
some parts of south america have umts networks,the n80 is for that american market.

I think a lot of it is due to america using a different band to everyone else. Its a bit like us here in the UK missing out on some great cars as we drive on the left and not the right like most of the rest of the world.
SE have to consider if the development of a phone is worth the money and the trouble when it is going to a relatively limited market.

I would have said that the difference in 2.5G frequencies was the main reason for SE not to release as many handsets for the Americas as it does for the rest of the world. There are actually a number of reasons that serve to limit SE products in the Americas.
First of all we have competing standards, GSM and CDMA (and to a lesser extent iDen). If you look at the biggest American market, the U.S., you will see that effectively the mobile market is split between CDMA and GSM. That means that someone releasing a GSM handset there isn't able to sell it to the entire mobile market. In contrast SE can release a product in Europe and be able to count the entire market as potential customers.
There is also the question of consumer demand. From what I can see there isn't the same demand in the U.S. for high-end devices as there perhaps is in Europe and parts of Asia. Why do I mention the U.S. here? It's the biggest market and as such it will have a strong influence over what SE does in the Americas. It's also worth pointing out that in some Latin and South American countries there simply might not be enough people who can realistically afford some of the more expensive handsets to make it practical to release them in those markets.
Thirdly I believe that Cingular had (or still has) a deal to only sell candybar handsets from Nokia. This would have been bad for SE because many of its handsets were candybars e.g. K700, K750, K300, K500, etc. That would have been a real bugger since SE would have been losing arguably the most powerful GSM network in the Americas for its candybar handsets.
Services are another consideration; the Americas don't have the same services as Europe or parts of Asia. 3G is relatively limited in the Americas compared with Europe and parts of Asia so SE will have less incentive to release American versions of its 3G products.

the J230A has been canceled. i think what scotsboyuk said is correct. the american market isn't ready for high end phones.
the new entry level J100 will have an a version. i gues SE things there is more potential to sell the J100a then the J230a
if sales in america would rize, i think SE would launch more phones for a friends overthere. but SE only has mid level phones, and i have no idea how they are doing.
i think in the next years europe and asia will slow down and america and other emerging markets will be the new battle ground

yes but the quadband chips are being used by SE now.. so why go back to triband? doesn;t sound efficient to me...

yes, but they use 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/900 wouldn't 850/900/1800/1900 everywhere be more economical?
