morning
If you pull the Hdd out the model number will be written on it
(u may be able to read it with out pulling it out depending on how much room you have around it )
you could if you liked, pull it out and take a pic of the front and back then we can see the model number etc

Miss C, don't worry about the "deep format" of your hard drive (the numbers leeboy is asking for). Deep format, otherwise called a low level format, you could de-calibrate the hard drive if you are not careful. Virus don't store themselves below the level of a standard format - that's a myth. Once you format normally the viruses will be gone. But once windows is running again you need to activate the windows xp firewall BEFORE you connect back onto the internet. You should also as the very first thing you do after connecting to the internet is install and update an AntiVirus program (AVG Free Edition available from
http://www.grisift.com is an excellent free soltuon)
To install Windows XP you need to get the system to pick up the cd when booting (go into the bios to do that - you don't need to open the pc). If it says "press any key to boot from cd" when you put the Windows XP cd in and turn the computer on, then it is already setup to boot from cd.
Then you can press any key and the Windows XP installation will begin. It will go through a stage where the screen is blue with white writing. In this stage it will ask where you want to install windows. In the list will be your hard drive. If you select that drive, and then delete it (follow the onscreen prompts carefully), you can then create a new partition which windows will be installed on.
Hope this helps, if you need anymore info post here or pm me if you don't get a reply.

sure can. You can create and delete partitions as you need within the XP install itself. No need for fdisk or any of that rigmorale.

@Max the only need for fdisk etc is because if youve had viruses.... XP format does not do a complete deep formatt... so although your files will be deleted, some files remain and if these files are infected you'll have the same problem.... the idea i thought was to give a complete, fresh installation..... this cannot be done through the windows cd alone... although ive used xp disk to reinstall many times , ive found that when ive had viruses etc... ive needed a deeper formatter... something to clear everything...
Each to their own tho

*each and every virus is different, so no-one can say that its a 'myth'.... from my understanding if a restore/repair didnt work, the likely hood of a simple reinstall for the xp disk will also not work.... and miss uk is totally right, its not hard, infact its amaximum of 4 screws (at the most to remove your hdd to get the model number, by the way, i didnt suggest fdisk, i suggested visiting teh manufacturers website and downloading their recommended toll of formatting back to factory settings where personally, i have had absoulutly no problems what so ever...)*
