ok...might get unlocked in the summer when virgin launches their 3g network...but otherwise i'm waiting till the end of the year, and buying txt packs instead - saved quite heavily in last couple of days!

This is definitely good advice, forward planning is very important. It might save you quite a bit in the long run if you look at the different tariffs and options carefully befoe buying a new mobile.

I think there is an element of truth in this depending upon what standard of handset you want. The thing is we should be able to have good handsets along with good prices, but we don't seem to make our voices heard on the matter. The EU is looking into romaing charges, which is good news for customers, but ideally the networks would be more competitive.
I don't know if I would go so far as to call the big UK networks a cartel, but certainly competition between them isn't very apparent to me.

if you dont like something dont buy it, EVENTUALLY they will have to cut prices. i think the problem is that mobile operators over spent greatly on 3g licenses, and have to recoup their costs somewhere.
im not sticking up for the companies, i would love it to be cheaper, but we are more likely to see more features per a price plan, rather than the price plan being reduced
eg 200 mins anytime roughly £30,
to be more competitive they might throw in some msg's/video calls, but still retain the £30 if that makes sense!
like voda's current offer, after 7pm hour call only 3 mins charge, i think that is fantastic...and its the only thing keeping me there

The handset side of things is probably the best part because we can get very expensive handsets either free or very cheap.

I would agree with voting with your wallet, but only to an extent. Because the networks have rather similar prices it means that as you leave one network to protet their prices you are effectively joining another and lending support to their prices. However, if enough people leave a network it might be enough to convince them to be more competitive.
3G licenses haven't really impacted the prices of calls or texts in my opinion. I think the networks are probably going to look to content e.g. music, videos, etc to recoup their license fees.

Offering more for the same price is fair enough, but then that is only good value if you actually use those features. One of the worst areas in the UK is data, we seem to have very high data charges, even when compared with some other European countries never mind Asia and North America.

i agree completely with the data charges we have here, they are crazy..no operator would reduce their prices (unless to capture a market share -hutinson) its like a cartel i would say though, 200 mins any time, is approx 30 quid any network...but you can only get some of the phones on certain operators -w900/v800 being the notable ones imo, i was surprised that the w900 is not in black with voda...
if you are JUST looking for a good contract, there are a lot of good cash back deals, two years ago i got a 12 month contract 750 mins off peak (t-mobile) absolutely free -paid for my contract upfront, and then after a month claimed it back from the dealer.
side note -n80 fantastic phone imo, wifi (yeah no more crazy data charges..my place of study is a wifi hot bed!)
mp3 player..and its a phone!
i think it will be a few years until prices are reduced, but they will get reduced-if you know anything about the adsl market in the uk, 4 years ago it was ridiculously high..after some competition, it is now dirt yeah (i pay £9.99 for 1mb unlimited btw). i also feel as the market for mobiles is extremely saturated, there will be a point, where there will be no extra feautures needed (after you have a camera/video recorder/mp3/wifi what more could your want?!!) on this note i would like to see what SE will respond with.
