Yes, CoreMP4 codec is really a killer codec which makes movies playback on our P series a real contender to WM devices. However, the delay in releasing a final fully working version of TCPMP is really too long a wait as SmartMovie already has a full working version (though it only supports xvid AVI) for about 2 months already. I've tried TCPMP 0.71j beta is yes, quality wise is definitely at the same level as SmartMovie, and I sincerely hoped the developers can put in more efforts to make it final the soonest possible.

@ Mick,
just installed the new SM a couple of days ago and yes, it is improved, video playback equal to TCPMP but it still takes ages to skip to a point in the film. I'd like to see the final release version of TCPMP to see if the features match up to SM.
Cheers. Matt

Smartmovie now play 24fps well!? Hmm, will have to check this out as was still using 2.76. This could be the answer to my prayers as I encode and watch a lot of movies on my P910i and the 12.5fps was a real killer. Encoding at ~130 kbps produced excellent quality but the reduced frame rate would really show up in fast motion scenes.

Well I have been playing around with both Smartmovie and TCPMP and I am quite happy with both. Obviously Smartmovie is most useful as it's a fully featured but TCPMP seems to be able to handle slightly higher bitrates and colour looks a bit better. The quality on both is still superb.
Been doing a lot of encoding at varying bitrates & resolutions to see what I can push them to. I did get up to 400kbps using TCPMP though this was full wide screen. Most things I manually convert to 16:9 which looks good on a P910 screen and at this aspect ratio 300kbps still plays smoothly. I normally have audio at 64kbps 22Khz (might play round with this next)
I am just very glad that at long last I can watch everything at full fps instead of half fps. Now to start encoding a lot of stuff to watch while I'm on the train.... 24, Lost, Sopranos, The Simpsons, Prison Break, X-men (cartoons), et al

Hi All,
on smartmovie 3.1 and above, using pocketdivx encoder, here's the best settings:
1. video quality set to 10
2. Audio quality set to 7 then click on the > button and set it to 22.1Khz.
3. Output dimension change to 320 x 208
with the above settings, SmartMovie playsback very well. However, do note that audio is supported only at 22.1Khz.
TCPMP playsback slightly better quality than SmartMovie, but really it needs proper playlist or folder support cos currently it loads and plays everything and the user has no control over what he wants to playback.
Can someone tries 128kbps with 44.1Khz and see if it is too much for TCPMP?

I've been playing around some more and one thing which is definite is that the sound on TCPMP is much better than Smartmovie. It is much more noticeable than the difference in visual quality. There is much less sibilance and distortion with TCPMP. All TCPMP needs for me to use if is audio pre-roll/delay
With encoding you can't beat 2 pass xvid encode using VirtualDub. At around the 300kbps the quality is very sharp. Some of my old cartoons that were done from a poor source look look sharper on the P910 once it's been encoded!
For Cartoons, Anime etc you can use higher bitrates than TV/Movie stuff.
There is not much point in doing audio at 128kbps 44Khz, it's better to give that bitrate to the video. You can do a blind A-B test between a mp3 encoded at 128kbps and 64kbps and I suspect you'll be hard pressed to notice the difference listening through the normal headhones on your P910.

On Smartmovie 3.12 and above, the audio quality on UIQ devices is much better, supporting higher samplerates than 22,1 KHz.
I asked in their forum about faster seeking - it seems that SM does additional decoding to get to the exact time position, rather than just the nearest keyframe (which TCPMP does) which is why it's slower.
They may be implementing search just by keyframe and with video on, like in TCPMP, in a future version - let's hope it's soon
