> EDGE on Orange W810i in London

so my instincts were right...they do have EDGE on orange. Have you got an old sim-card...or did you use the sim-card that came with the phone....or was there not one that came with it :S i don't know...how long have you had the phone...it could take orange a couple of days to enable EDGE on your simcard etc. things like that...

Edge works fine for me in London, it seems to be mostly in Major town centres..and the speeds are pretty good. I was using it fine with my Qtek S200 and streaming video from the pc to the phone and it was ok....

EDGE *is* on on Orange UK. Launched commercially on Feb 1st.

The "E" you get on your phone does mean you get EDGE (EGPRS). I dont understand what you mean by you getting GPRS...
And
is clearly incompetent if they say you need a SIM card update. Of course you dont need a new SIM card! And these Orange dept obviously has no clue what they're talking about.

EDGE is similar to GPRS but around 5 times faster.
Theoreticall maximum speed of GPRS is 53 kbps, and of EGDE is 240 kbps.
If You have a Sonyericsson, a little E over the signal bars shows that EDGE is available in your area.
In Hungary I measured EDGE with a W810i: download speed was constantly around 184..200 kbps.

I might have worded my email wrongly and hence misunderstanding, but at the moment I only get a letter "G" over the signal bar, which signifies only GPRS. I wish I could get "E" ! The phone was upgrade directly from Orange about 3 weeks ago and it came with a new SIM card. This is really frustrating, especially when people onthe other end of the line go "EDGE....what is that?". Similar thing with SE support as well.
At the moment I suspect it is because of heavy Orange customisation has gone wrong somewhere, will keep on fighting for this holy grail edge

Right lets see if I can shed some light on your situation.. Firstly if your phone is Orange Branded then its more than likely that Orange might have disabled the feature accidently or knowingley as they are known to do silly things like this.
So get your phone flashed to the generic firmware and see what happens then.
If that fails then its more than likely that there is no Edge reception in your area. You can check it here.

Enter your home phone number and post code, when the results show up click on LLU XDSL and it will tell you if there is EDGE in your area.

About one year ago, there was only one device available that supported both EDGE and 3G. This year there is over 34.
are yet to introduce one that can be used on either but that the rate these are being introduced I would say it shouldn't be long.
I agree that it is the content that brings in the money, downloads etc.
Plus if they opt for streaming TV format for there television phones then that should boost 3G uptake. The data charges are well too high IMO although for streaming TV it is all inclusive I suppose.
