it looks to be $2600 (£1400) for the lowest spec model although I may be able to get it cheaper if I can use the student site

Back lights fail on mac laptops too...
I'm not getting into the old PC vs mac war here, a computer is a computer to me. I try to repair them no matter what OS they have on them, I really don't have a preference.
What I will suggest to you though is that if possible, you should give a mac a very thorough test drive before you commit. The only reason is that while the vast majority of people get on with Macs ok, and even end up swearing never to go back to Windows, I've met a surprising amount of people who have bought a mac and absolutely HATED it.
So before you shell out the $$$, make sure you're comfortable using a Mac and if possible, make sure you can get a full no quibble refund within the first week or so just in case you find that you don't like them.

we dont have to worry about me getting a mac

too expensive for me honestly.
i dont plan on getting another laptop honestly. not becuase of this, but becuase i dont need it. i just need a PC. and i know alot more about PCs than macs. if i were to get a mac, i would go to the local apple store and mess with one for awhile first.
but for now, i think im just looking for a cheap PC
