out of curiousity.... have you removed all floppies and cds from the drives?

Seriously, by the sounds of it your PC needs to be looked at in the workshop. I'd guess that it's almost certainly a hardware problem from what you are describing. As I said before, by this stage I'd be swapping bits in and out to try and solve the problem, if you haven't got the bits to do it you're a bit stuck
Just one thing though, you did unplug all peripherals like printers, USB modems etc. before you reinstalled?

yea i unplugged all things. i really think its the hard drive.
Might just chuck it all away and buy a new pc tommorow.

Restore the bios, there should be a "manufacturer restore" option, restart and check if it detects the hd and cd/dvd drive.

For some reason I could not reformat my HD and each reinstallation would shrink free HD space.So I used a free HD wipe program which fits on a floppy and completely wipes the HD,OS and all.
