nah well this is what they say on the apple site where they come from:
If you are looking for an Apple product and also for the best possible deal, then this new section is for you. Apple is now selling its refurbished products through a dedicated store.
Here are answers to some of the most frequent questions about refurbished products.
1- How can I buy refurbished products?
- As quantities are limited, we advise you to already create a store account before the store opens. You will then save precious time when ordering.
- Refurbished units are sold as they come, and as customers order. The first validated orders get the first units.
- To buy refurbished products, you can only pay using credit card.
- You must place your order via the Internet (not by telephone).
2- What are refurbished products?
Refurbished products have been returned to Apple because of a defective component or because products were returned for a refund. Returned products such as these are then fully repaired, reconfigured, and tested. They are in 100% working condition, and are then sold as refurbished product after their packaging has been fully checked. As these refurbished products have been unpacked and manipulated, they might however exhibit some minor cosmetic imperfection.
Refurbished products can include demonstration machines, units needing minor repairs and customer cancellations. These items have been fully tested by Apple and carry the same guarantee and support as all new Apple products.
3- What should I expect when I buy a refurbished product?
- A price discount of up to 45%.(Discount price compared to the original price of the exact same unit)
- A fully functional unit, with complete documentation.
- The assurance that the unit meets Apple quality levels, and that its defective components have been replaced by genuine Apple components.
- The risk that your unit may present minor cosmetic imperfection, such as scratches, marks, discolouration, etc.
- In case of returned refurb unit, customers will receive a refund.
but when I have had refurb ipods etc they have basically been brand new and I wouldnt have guesed they were used
