i think they should bring the old /// t20 back - just make the screen slightly bigger and make it colour, stick a camera in the back - and then voila! you have a good, basic phone - with some decent features...maybe not this simple...but it would be a nice phone - i'd want one!

Good point about brand image, perhaps this is a way SE could go if they decide to attack the entry level market more, especially if they want to expand their market share more.


Ahm...I don't see a camera on the J200 or any fancy stuff

Show me another new phone that's more basic (other than monochrome display's ) than a J200.

It's got:
Music tones (MP3/AAC)
Polyphonic Sound 40 voices
LCD, 4,096 colour STN
128x128 pixel
SMS
IR

It doesn't have:
Picture Messaging
Internet
Email
Bluetooth
Camera
Media Player
Memory (okay, it does have a little bit)
Memory Expansion

etc etc etc.

I'm not talking specs per se, perhaps more asthetics. I can't really say why, but there seems to be something missing from SE's entry level.

Look at it this way, I've seen plenty of older and entry level Nokias, but very few/if any J200s, T290s, etc. etc.!

When i look around me hood i see some of the kids rocking budget phones and they are all rocking a nokia of some sort. I think the problem lies with SE not presenting their budget line to the public effectively enough. Then again the only real budget SE avaible here seems to be the J210 the rest being the Z, K, W and P series phones.

hmmm, okay, I get where you are coming form now. I don't entirely agree that the cheap handsets from SE are deficient aesethetically. I like looks of the J200i as a phone (if I had to settle for such a basic device - heaven forbid!). T290 etc getting a bit long in the tooth design wise.

But I think the biggest factor is that SE have only started to target the low end recently, so it will take another year for the market to absorb the fact the SE have nice looking low end models with basic features.

I got the point and agreed with sammy_boy.
As this thread mentioned "the developed world", I would say that it was reported here in Indonesia that the best seller mobile phone is still Nokia 2300 since years ago till today.
Even SE J230 can't beat that old Nokia thing.
The second best seller currently was Nokia 6600.

yeah but SE have only just started bringing out large varieties of handsets. Until very recently they brought out virtually only one model per targeted market, now they are taking the Nokia strategy of a smattering of choices ion each market segment. Once this strategy kicks in, they will start to seriously gain ground on Nokia.

This is why I don't fully agree with Sammy_boy, because what he is saying is true of the "old" Sony Ericsson, it's not where they are at now. SE have changed their market strategy radically in the last year, in case anyone failed to notice the 14 odd phones they've released in the last twelve months.

What Sammy_boy wants is very close around the corner IMHO.

I agree that a replacement for the J series is needed. The J100, although cheap, is pretty useless. If it is meant for targeting the young ones and old ones, then they should've gotten rid of the colour screen in favour of a more readable B&W one. It isn't really too attractive either, and the keys are too tightly packed, a big no-no in simple phones. The only succesful one is the Z300, which although isn't in the J series, was a low end phone. And it was successful because it looks expensive, it looks nice. The J series all look the same to me, nothing outstanding. They should release someting like the 6030. Looks like a business phone, but simple underneath.
And one of the huge flaws of the J series is reliability. I've heard loads of stories of the Jxxx's keypads and joysticks just not responding, the phone hanging etc. Nokia phones are reliable. People in this market range want a phone that'll last. People who buy budget phones only want them to call and sms, can perhaps the odd show off. A radio in the J230 is not enough to entice consumers.
