interesting news jimcomms. So the inflight base station will handle hand- offs to ground based cell towers?

A stewardess on a First Choice flight gave me grief about my W800 last week. I explained it had a Flight Mode. She didn't care/understand
When she went away, I just turned it back on and kept it out of site. I got no more grief from her. I never had problems on other airlines.

Under Flight Mode: NO CONNECTIVITY
Use your camera, music/video player and other gaming stuffs with no problem. But no BT, GSM, GPRS and stuffs.....

I'm guessing the airline has its own network, which will charge vastly inflated roaming prices, rather than simply relay your call via an existing land-based network.
Lufthansa have been testing such equipment but I have to say I don't know the full details. What I do know is that some airlines (SAS) will allow the use of Bluetooth in the air! As most phones will disable this in flight mode, that leaves only PDAs or laptops that could feasibly use it mid-flight.

regarding airlines that allow cellphone usage while it's on flight mode, I think its mostly western airliners that are aware of it. After all, most western countries are first-world countries compared with asia. I still get a lotta crap from Malaysia (pfft, so much for best in-air service 3years in a row), Brunei airlines, and even singapore airlines. I guess these airlines dont think much in terms of advancements in cellphone tech.

BUT..still no fm radio. Yet fm radio doesn't broadcast anything so how could it be an interference??
