one thing i realized and really hate is that the K800 imposes software noise-smoothout filter on its photo to mask the noise which is common on CMOS capture devices. I used to use Noiseware on my K750 photos when i think necessary, but on my K800 the built-in software filter often make details in photos look fake and washed out. I think they're just cheating by implying such cheap method on the quality-wise not so different handset camera and call it a "Cyber-Shot" !

btw, cmos USED TO BE inferior, but cmos chips are fast becoming just as capable as ccd, and some cmos chips are now actually better than most ccd's. So if you are going to refute someone, check your facts.

Sorry, I wasnt aware of the R1. Although I wouldnt compare a 10.3MP R1 against a 3.2MP K800i. I have now searched for other CMOS Cybershots and couldnt find any (you are welcome to point out more to prove me wrong), including 3.2MP CMOS Cybershots, so I would conclude that the K800i doesnt have a Cybershot camera pickup.
I would not have been surprised if Sony helped slightly with the development though.

But a cybershot camera doesn't have to have a ccd, that's the only point I'm making. I wouldn't for a second compare a 3.2 with a 10MP, but you used the argument that the K800 can't be a cybershot because it has a cmos sensor - I'm just making the point that cmos sensors aren't as incompentent as you think, and therefore it would be within reason to call a cmos based 3.2MP camera "cybershot". Besides I think you are missing the point. "Cybershot" is about other technologies and end user features not just Megapixels.

Why shouldn't the K800 be called a "cybershot" camera? After all no one says a walkman phone isn't a true "walkman" just because it doesn't use atrac, which is traditionally the walkman digital music format?

If a new Sony Cybershot camera was produced, and Sony claimed it had a "Cybershot camera module", yet that module wasn't in any other cybershot camera's, would you claim it is therefore NOT a cybershot? No of course you wouldn't. The K800 is the same. It is the newest bottom of the range Sony Cybershot camera. And I wouldn't be surprised if you do see the K800 camera module appear in bottom of the cybershot range - because OEM's ARE moving to cmos sensors where only ccd have been used in the past. If there is one camera with a cmos sensor (2 if you include the K800), then more will follow you can be sure of it.

It's quite clear from this link, that Sony's specification of a "Cybershot" is completely independent of whether the chip is a ccd or cmos:

Regarding Sony helping with development, that's been happening since the K750. The K750/W800 camera module is the first camerphone module made by Sony (ie: not SE, but Sony themselves):

1) 3.2 mega
2) real Xenon flash
3) best pic
4) more useful and wide range of shoot mode
5) stabillizer
6) photo with more detail
7) night photo with much less noise

I know that, but I'm (apparently in vein) trying to point out that the K800 is a cybershot camera (when others in this thread are saying it isn't), and I am drawing in my evidence.

I only mentioned that the K750 uses a sony camera module as evidence that the K800 would likely also use a Sony camera module and not an SE one. Since the earlier and yes not as nice K750 also has a Sony camera module, I reckon it's good evidence that the K800 does also.

Most Cybershot cameras use Carl Zeiss lenses. The K800 uses a Sony lense. The Carl Zeiss is often better, but take the Carl Zeiss of the Nokia N90 - well from all reports that camera didn't stack up that well against the plastic lensed K750 (which is a Sony made lense)

I expect the next "Cybershot" phone will have Carl Zeiss.
