Yes, I am also experiencing that the reception indication is jumping from 1 , 2 and 4 bars. I am getting drop calls when I am using it on a moving train.
I hope that SE would give the option to use either dual or GSM mode in the next firmware so that the end user could choose one to use.
When I was using the Nokia N70, I kept getting drop calls when it was in dual mode as the handphone was changing from 2G to 3G and vice versa. I did not have anymore drop calls when I changed it to GSM mode.

Hi all, we've tested this out since M600i. The problem is not with any operator, but rather, the signal strength of M600i and P990i is really weak as compared to other phones like my good old P910i. I have had 5 sets of M600i all having the same issues irregardless of operators and now, even my brand new P990i is facing the same issues
The problem is getting serious if I take a lift up and down within my office building, where my P910i still has 3 - 4 bars of gsm signal, the M600i and P990i will get cut off from gsm networks and left with SOS/Emergency Call only status
I had brought up this issue a few weeks back over at my-symbian, but everyone there seems to swore that their GSM signal is very very strong

Can someone who is in touch with SE keep them updated about this issue?

Those bars are highly overrated. More bars do not necessarily translate into a higher quality voice conversation.

I have sent a mail to SE in Sweden...discussing these isues. I'm sure they are fully aware...but it couldn't hurt to let them know one more time!

While you are at it, why don't you tell the people at SE Sweden to include a time screen saver.
I've a pitch black screen and there is no indication whether the P990i is powered up or not.
Thanks.

I find this problem to go away if I set the phone to use GSM only......no UMTS (3G). With only GSM I get stronger reception (according to the bars on the screen at least)...and it doesn't "jump around" as much as with UMTS switched on.
I guess you would also save som bettry not using UMTS.
But....why the hell but a UMTS phone then? lol
