well USB bluetooth costs around £10-15 and consumes less power as they can be unplugged IR is no longer used by most laptop manufatourers as its quiet a big chip involved as i said before dont just focus on sony
www.ebuyer.co.uk specailes in cheap pc stuff and laptop and sell mac complete systems... also AVOID ebay for laptops you spend more than there worth... what are u going to use the system for?

ok my suggestion as prior to what i said
your gonna need a large memory source

1-2gb of DDR/DDR2
in my opinion dont look for large HDD's buy one with say 40-60gb HDD and buy your self a USB 2.0/firewire external drive with 250gb storage
u WILL need a dual core by the sounds of it or at least an HT core
windows xp pro is not needed (saves about £90 on the price) you can always upgrade later i would say Home would be ample (as your not networking)
Wifi yes! for net if using a hotspot
BT/IrDA na USB cables are quicker
erm widescreen? really? for programming? hi res maybe but wide screen maybe not?
as a programmer user i would recommend a
Celron/P4/AMD athlon/trion NOT SEMPRON/CENTRENO! they dont have the cache or power for multi tasking on that level chip with or without HT or Duo tech,
1 - 2gb DDR(2?)
60Gb hdd
Wifi
14-17inch TFT (basic screen)
with XP home

Don't get built-in BT, go for a USB Adapter.
BT Hardware varies widely - for instance theres Version 1.0 (now obselete), V 1.1 (common), V 2.0 (faster transfer speeds), Plus there's high speed BT (100Mbps - take that Wifi

) on the horizon.
Not to mention A2DP (Bluetooth Stereo) is hardware dependant and theres several A2DP BT Adapters around.
Wifi is a must have at present.
Get a widescreen - most webpages fit it better.
Be aware that this next 6 - 12 month period is a runout period as far as manufacturers are concerned. Windows Vista is coming soon and Laptops with 256 MB RAM and 40 Gb HD (like mine) will be consigned to the dustbin of history - in other words MASSIVE DEPRECIATION.
Don't get ripped off!

remember though ram and hdd's can be upgraded for a small price when new systems come out for example SD ram and DDR is dirt cheep since DDR2 but also vista isnt requiering that much of system specs
