once you have converted it, where does the file go? and how exactly do you convert it

Itunes usually exports tracks to:
C:\\Documents and Settings\\YOURUSERNAME\\My Documents\\My Music\\iTunes
Once Itunes is installed, run it, drag the mp3 you want to convert into the track list, right click on the track, and choose "Convert to AAC", and it should work. After that, just transfer it to your music folder on your phone, you can put it in any chosen folder under music, even your ringtones folder.

New developments: when using "Mix Audio" it seems like you can only use amr files. That sucks...
