I'm having this problem too. Can find the network and connect OK, but cannot actually access any web pages. This is using the 'default wi-fi account' which cannot be edited or viewed.
I tried creating a new wi-fi account and going through the settings to make sure there was no proxy, and also disabling the power-save option, but still get the same behaviour.
Settings on the new account:
SSID: (selected the network as it appeared in the list)
Authentication: Open
Network mode: Infrastructure
Ad hoc channel: 1
Data encryption: None
IP config: Automatically
IP DNS address: Automatically
Use proxy server: Unchecked
Power save: Off
RTS threshold(256-2347): 2346
Added this to the 'internet' group and the handset prompted me for which account to use, so I know it was using the correct one.
Phone: CXC162037 R5A006
Bluetooth: CXC162058 R4F01
Organizer: CXC162036 R3A04
CDA: CDA162008/91 R2A04
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? - can someone post working settings?
Oh - and it's on Vodafone UK.

Hi, I have the same problem with a vodafone P990, I think Vodafone have hardcoded the opera proxy setting in. I can now connect OK to my AP (set to 802.11b only!) and I can access the RSS feeds through it, but when I click on a story to open Opera I get the 'Could not connect to proxy' mesage.
What good is that on a phone with wifi!
Walled gardens eh?

The plot thickens...
I have managed to get it working now. I switched off all the bluetooth options and tried again and it now works fine with the default wi-fi account, so doesn't seem to be proxy or power-save.
Perhaps the others can give this a go and post back as to whether it helps or not.

In bold above is where your PROBLEM is!
AD-HOC is for transfering files from one WiFi enabled device (Smartphone/laptop) to another.
You want to surf the internet is MUST be set to INFRASTRUCTURE!
Intranet connected devices CAN surf the internet based on Ad-Hoc because of the way the network is setup, you're still going through a proxy even if you set one up or not; if you must setup a proxy then you dont get anywhere in that case. Ooops just noticed something why is your network mode set to Infrastructure yet your Channels set to Ad-Hoc? Doesnt make sense (when thinking about laptops) - but I dont own a P990i sorry just trying to help.
I say delete EVERY connection you have and then start from scratch. Do you have the ability to tell the browser to use one connection over the other?

Is your wireless connection in your prefered network group? check that

Thanks Prom1 - I didn't know what the difference was between Infrastructure and ad-hoc. The settings I used were the defaults.
The ad-hoc channel of 1 was set automatically when I created the account, but the option was greyed-out. I have checked and now see that it becomes editable when the network type is set to ad-hoc - so it wasn't really being used when I was trying to connect to the hotspot.
With both wi-fi accounts included in the internet group, the 'phone asks which of the two you want to use when it connects to the network, so I know I was using the default wi-fi account earlier today when I successfully connected.

NitroFan - thanks for the suggestion. The wireless accounts were included in the group. I think the 'phone would have just connected using 3G/GPRS if it hadn't been. Could also see which account was being used by looking in the connections manager.
As posted earlier, it seems to be working now that I've switched bluetooth off, although it may just be coincidence, and not the cause of the original problem.
