The T230 is based on the same software platform as the T68i/T300. One of the consequences is that each image is stored on the phone along with an uncompressed raw copy. This is because the CPU on the phones is not too powerful, and decompressing each image everytime it is needed would make phone slugglish.
One uncompressed raw image which is 101x80 and uses more than 256 colors but less than 65536 (that is, 16 bits per pixel), will need 16160 bytes of memory which must be stored along the original file. If an .jpg is 1kb size, it will suck "about 17kb" of your phone memory.
If an image has 256 or less colors, the raw image will need half the space.
I hope it clarifies the extrange behaviour...

I have no real complaints about my phone, but i had noticed this and also heard rumours about
phones all showing similar behaviour, which made me feel uneasy with my decision to replace my old beauty with a new k750 or so.
