what are you using as your adsl modem at the min ? i quite like netgear stuff no real reason for that just thats what ive got and it was easy to set up for p2p etc.
my dad recently bought a belkin router for his cable broadband and that was easy to set up and works really well.

i just posting what the article said. its said if your on a 1mb connection you probably wont notice it. once you get above this problems can occur and you can lose around 25% of your connection speed.
i would assume its not gospel and how close you are to the exchange will have a bearing ie if you live very close then you ll probably get away with it if you quite far away then extending the line further may cause a problem

the buffalo one looks better value for money as it comes with the usb adapter for £50
not sure if the netgear one does so you have to add that to the cost of it.

What? eh? Oh, Sorry
Errrrm, well my favourite wireles router is the netgear DG843G largely because it's highly compatible with UK ISPs and it's a doddle to set up usually. It's not the best out there feature-wise and it's not the cheapest, but it definately works!
I'm surprised about your wired connection though. I've slung 50 meters or more at a time of standard cat-5 ethernet cables around buildings between workstations, hubs, servers and routers and I've never seen a 25% drop in bandwidth on any particular machine
You sure you haven't got a dicky cable there? It's true that signal strength and therefore sometimes performance does drop in relation to cable length but it's not normally that bad. Is your ethernet cable run near any mains cables, phone lines, cable lines etc? Interference?
EDIT: Just read your PM! Are you sure it's not your distance from the exchange or the quality of your phone line / sockets that are causing the problem? I'm on 8Mb broadband but I only get 4-5Mb for those reasons

i wasnt refering to an ethernet line but a phone line. i may have got the wrong end of the stick, i thought the 8m extention was a phone line extesion not an ethernet line.
in which case if its ethernet you would nt see the drop of 25% as thats related to a phone line extention
