Well unstable is the situation .Vodafone and Ross barkmans ,3G cid 2. gets me on sometimes then next try to connect says no carrier detected.
Is it real that different than setting up my 910i. ?

If you don't have a strong 3G signal, I suggest you try to put the P990 on 3G only and try from there. Often when something like this happens, putting it in Flight mode and then back on will get it working.

Thanks all for your help.

I guess the takeaway for me is that I WAS connected at 3G speed, even though Windows XP was displaying 115kbps and the P990 connection log showed something called "GPRS modem".

A speed test at http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed confirmed that I was downloading at above 130kbps.

And I also confirm that *99***5# is the right number for a P990i bought from Vodafone in the UK.
