They didn't for quite a while with the P910i. I know as I was waiting for what seemed like months before I was able to do it. Everyone else was talking about this and that firmware and we were stuck with what came with the phone. And they wrecked that one as well.
No wonder half the shortcut buttons on my new phone don't work! Orange again, I ought to learn.

A cautionary note on all this stupid branding some networks insist on putting on their phones, one good reason I'm sticking with O2, and if I switch networks I'll insist on a sim free phone if at all possible (with the exception of the settings, of course!).
As you may have gathered, I'm not a big fan of network branding, since Orange started putting that horrid 'home' screen on their phones it's now a toss up as to whether it's Voda or Orange that have the worst branding now!

Is this just an Orange problem then or do others have the same problems? Exactly the same thing happened with the P910i. I got it debranded in the end, it was a nightmare. Why do Orange insist on putting their mark on any phone they issue?
{499 again after Mods removed the other thread!}

To be honest, i had the same worry when i purchased my P990i form Vodafone. I thought it would've been branded left right and centre but fortunately the only branding on my P990i is the startup and shutdown screen and thats it, no external branding on the phone, nothin on the box and the phone is sim-free

Very lucky indeed.

I've just rang Kuehne-Nagel who are replacing my LCD screen about whether they would debrand my phone whilst it's with them. They said no, that it was illegal and also, as a cautionary note, said that SE now have software that could tell them if your phone was debranded or unlocked and they would not repair any phone under warranty that had been done.
New news to me or is this usual?

It probably constitutes tampering with the firmware so would invalidate the warranty I'd imagine... or perhaps just a way for service providers to try to protect their sim locks!

Hi all,
The problems you are now facing are exactly the problems i had with my Orange P900. In reality any of you that wish to return your new phone and cancel your contract are able to to at no loss to yourselves as this is what i did and received not only a full refund but cancellation of my contract after only 6 weeks without penalty. Below is the the letter i sent although this was followed up by writing directly to Orange Legal Department informing them that if this was not resolved amicably i would be issuing a summons.
For Attention of Graham Nixon
Dear Sir,
Further to my recent letter to which I have still have not received any response to, & after having spoken to Data support on Friday 11th June & being informed my case was now being dealt with by Orange executive office. I phoned them on Monday 14th June in the morning to be told that a letter had been sent to me, don’t you believe in talking to people any more after all you are a mobile phone company.
On Wednesday 16th June I was able to contact Carrie Million who had been ringing me on my old number and had lost my landline number she states this is an Ericsson problem not Oranges & would not accept what I told her re the information I have been given via Ericsson data support.
I have now received her letter that states and I quote.
“Further to our recent conversation, I can confirm that you are unable to download the software update from the Sony Ericsson Website.
After investigation, I have been advised that it is not Orange that prevents customers from downloading this information. The software is not tested by Orange and therefore Ericsson blocks the Orange IMEI’s. Please accept my sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Whilst I appreciate this may not be the response you hoped for, I trust I have clarified this matter”
I have kept this letter as I intend to use it as evidence.
This does not make sense as it is Orange that doesn’t allow the Ericsson site to download to our phones as confirmed to me by Ericsson Data support. As Orange needs to update their server to give Ericsson permission and need to test these minor changes to the firmware that are basically bug fixes. This has been done once so what’s the delay that now leaves us two updates behind? Even T-Mobile customers are able to access newer firmware than Orange customers does this mean T-Mobile give their customers better service than Orange?
I have also been told doing an update invalidates the warranty. The one thing that annoys me more than anything is being lied to. This is the same situation as the billing problem I had when your staff insist they are right irrespective of the facts. If as her letter states I am unable to download the updates from the Sony Ericsson website than I am not being able to fix problems and use all of the phones functions and have been misled in the sale and signing of a new contract.
This means I will need to cancel my contract with no penalty applied and receive a full refund for my phone.
If this can not be done amicably and in a reasonable time frame I will have no option other than to institute Litigation to recover my monies as you are clearly in breach of contract and have sold me a phone under false pretences.
I have contacted Sony Ericsson to make them fully aware of the situation as you are tarnishing there reputation as a producers of quality products and trying to shift the blame to them. I must add that having been a customer of Orange since it first started and having worked within an Orange Dealer connecting phones to your network I cannot believe just how bad the situation has become recently. False information & a lack of action appear to be the way Orange now deals with its customers.
Have you never heard that in the world of Business the customer is king? I have also included a photo copy of the letter from Carrie Million Executive Assistant & the update service leaflet included in the Orange box the phone comes in. Also I have printed out the pages from the Sony Ericsson website clearly showing the update service is part of the features of the P900.
I have also spoken to your legal department on Thursday 17th June and asked them where I need to serve my summons; I have offered them the opportunity to speak to me directly to see if we can resolve the situation without the need for litigation. I have also now sent copies of both my letters to you and all relevant information to the legal department so they can see that Orange has no defence and will lose any legal action taken by me against Orange. If as your repeating automated service says Orange gives excellent customer service I can’t imagine what would happen if your service was only average?. A very dissatisfied & soon to be an ex Orange customer.
Sincerely yours,
Marc Obermann
Once the legal department woke up and actually read my letters i was phoned and sent a jiffy bag to return the phone and received a full refund plus cancellation of my contract and was the last time i had anything to do with Orange and will never return to Orange even if they where the only Network left. Everything said here also applies to those of you with Voda branded phones who are being denied access to using SEUS to update your phones as Voda is now claiming you are not going to be allowed to use it and must send your phone off for up to a week. You are the consumer you have rights and should not accept these feeble actions by the Networks as they are illegal and if correct you have been mislead and missold your phones. Hope this of help to any of you that are so frustrated and have had enough.
Marc
