Where is it stated that the W950i has a different .mp3 player? It has MegaBass which in many instances distorts the true sound of the music and adds color. This is a "to each his own" issue, but MegaBass does not sound natural.

A comparison can be found here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]00&template=pp3&zone=pp&lm=pp3

I used the P990, and M600i as comparison phones.

@sapporobaby

I don't know about hardware differences or s/w differences. I used my own ears to judge the difference when using the DS970 headset. Using the same MP3 files the W950 sound reproduction is better - what do I mean by better:

- each individual instrument is heard clearly and I can follow each instrument
- 3D placement (stereo) is more clearly defined
- bass instruments low frequencies are easier to distinguish and follow

I hope that helps. Having spent even more money on my hifi than on all my UIQ3 devices (4 units), I know that there is a large element of subjectivity to assessing music reproduction.

according to eldar at mobile review, the W950's audio player is calibrated differently to the M600 and P990 to give it a much richer sound. makes sense since you are buying a walkman after all, and so that the differences are not merely superficial.

@Jah as well,

Thanks for the info. I do not really use the .mp3 on my M600i. I mainly use it to listen to audio books when possible as I have an 80 gig iPod when I want to listen to music. What head phones are you using? I had some Etymotic ER-6's but switched to Shure E5C's. They should arrive in the mail in a few days. Can't wait.

Just noticed that with wired headsets the connector you use makes a difference to the sound quality (ie SE or third-party). This is the characteristics of a true audiofile product!
