drhigh5 - if you do that orange will indeed bar the handset. this is done by barring the IMEI number (the phones serial no).In the old days this would have prevented the phone being used on the orange network only. Now, however, all the networks share the IMEIs of phones reported as lost/stolen (especially if they have been subject to a network insurance claim). What this means is that if you put your sim into a phone on this list, your sim will be barred and your phone will display a message such as 'stolen phone bar'. You can remove this bar by calling your service provider. However, if you have your card barred like this 3 times, they will not remove the bar. Ever. This is because they accept that you might put your sim in a second hand phone that you don't know is stolen whilst believing it is ok, but to do it 3 times implies you are up to something dodgy (which is what you were proposing).
The only way round this is to change the IMEI number of the phone, but as of Nov 1st that is a criminal offence punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

i`m in South Wales so its a bit far, the shop does do a mail order but like i said i personally wouldn`t send my phone in the post. You could try looking on, uk telecom mobile, there are plenty who can do it on there perhaps a bit closer to you,

Orange barr there phones via the imei when they are reported missing, so the only way to fraud orange insurance is to change the imei. O2 on the other hand never bought the software to remotely lock phones via imei, which is why they ask for a police report and various other details when you submit your claim.

I actually feel better that I cannot commit a criminal offence and get away with it. It has removed any temptation that may have lingered in the back of my mind.
I have another question: At the end of my year's contract with Orange can I then keep my phone and unlock it legally?

I had a problem where I lost (by accident) an old nokia 7110 years ago and orange locked it.. I got this phone handed back to me and when I called orange they unlocked it again so I had 2

Hmm... interesting stuff.
What happens if someone buys a phone from a place like eBay and they find it's been blacklisted? If the seller doesn't offer a refund can the buyer still get the phone unblocked by contacting the network he wants to use it on?

no mate. if a phone has been barred as stolen it is not getting unbarred again (unless it is by the rightful owner). however, you would have a legal case against ebay and the seller for trading stolen goods.

i have had a phone that was barred from the orange network given me as a replacement from a service centre before now. It was NOT an SE phone though. The said network removed the bar on the handset, no questions asked, This was a little over a year ago though.
