I haven't really made a proper comparison so far, but I think the best part about using the HPM-70 is that the connection's pretty tight. With my old generic adaptor, the sound would sometimes become mono when it came loose. I believe it's a good investment. But ultimately, the sound quality depends on your encoding of the songs as well as your choice of earphones.

To my ears a generic adapter attached to cheap Koss headpdones sounded the same if not a little better than the included HPM-70. So I assume the adapter isn't at fault with interefering with audio quality that much however as Deluded mentioned the build quality of these generic adapters isn't solid and they tend to come loose unlike the HPM-70. And since you are using a long corded generic adapter with included mic why not just use the HPM-70 that comes with the phone and connect your Shure buds to that?

I would have, except the included phones (I'm not sure of the model number) do not have a 9mm headphone jack. The headphones are one piece with the microphone.

Anyway, the Shure headphones are standard. The stock earbuds that came with the phone do not disconnect from the microphone-adapter portion.

Huh, that's odd! You do have a W810 right? I thought they all shipped with the HPM-70 which indeed sperates at the mic allowing you to plug in any standard headphones although the the cord would be incredibly long. I've also done some exploring around and found that Shure makes an i2c headset that would allow you to listen to music and take calls. Curious what the port options on that are however as it only states it's made for the Treo.

Well I guess we can settle on the fact that we certaintly wouldn't mind seeing a 3.5 jack incorporated on future handsets. I feel my w810 would be absolutely perfect if it just had one.

@sockhead, if you do come across any good deals on the HPM-70, I think it's worth getting yourself one. I know SE have quite a few different adaptors but I think this gets the job done without the frills that I do not need.

Just recieved my fourth generic adapter in the mail today. Works great, for today, then I'll expect it to loosen up and start falling out of the phone in about a month.
I so want some kick ass heaphones but not sure if I can stand the humiliation of standing on the corner with my Shure buds all fancied up and pluged in only to have my music blaring out of my handset unbeknownst to me cause my friggin adapter has gone tits up and fallen out again. It's one type of frustration to have the cheap piece of crap fall out when attached to a $20 pair of earbuds but I am just certain a whole new level of embarassment is apt to be achieved when it falls out while rigged up to some higher end gear.
When will SE realase a simple fastport to 3.5 adapter with no mic and no cord. I just want a simple option to plug in my damn phones without all the hassel and the added weight of the whole mic and 9 foot cord disaster.
