Am I right in assuming that the code will allow any sim to be used but not enable me to get rid of the Orange branding (homescreen etc.)?

Correct Unlocking will just remove the sim lock it will NOT remove the branding.

Hi Ben,
It cost me £20 and came within about four days or so. Worth it so
I can use another Sim in it. Definitely a shame about the branding.

I played a trick on my subconscious, i bought a very cheap Orange branded P990i & refused to look at unbranded p990 homescreens,
& hey presto !........ i'm non the wiser.

stable frmware though, iit miight be Orange but it isnt a Lemon
