I'm sorry. I've seen this post so many times - the complaints about the HISS on the W800/810/T610/K750.
I saw fiddlesticks because nobody has done a scientific method at quantifying or even qualifying this claim.
1) Pick a song and note in a post its kbps bitrate - whether its constant or varaible - constant bitrate prefered.
2) Transfer method into MORE THAN 1 phone.
3) Volume of the tracks playback.
4) Note the listening environment.
5) a small group of ppl - say 5 - that are UNBIASED to the musical track at hand.
6) the same group of ppl should have to KNOW the track through and through to know WHAT to listen for if the playback is faulty.
7) Note the ppl dont have any hearing problems & their respective age group SHOULD be withing +/- 5 between all of them to rule out AGE degraded hearing sensitivities!

Pick MORE than 1 SE phone that is capable of playing back the music through the same medium - Fast Port Headset or desktop speaker accessorie between ALL chosen FE phones. Furthermore, pick another 2 phones that the listeners DONT have a bias against for fair comparison.
9) Create a scale of say 1-10 for clarity, crispness, initial playback of say 1 bar (4/4 timing) of the music, and abrupt STOP of the track.
10) Repeat ALL the previous criteria for the same song & the transition for playback to ANOTHER unbiased & well known track for all listeners.
THIS would QUALIFY, & QUANTIFY claims of lack of quality and present the issue in an INTELLIGENT way that SE can be working with to alleviate.
Please CAREFULLY read the 10 steps THEN think hard how you would approach this. THEN multiply possible results for over 10'000 members in this forum ALONE, then another 100 Million or whatever the number of TOTAL W810's, W800s/K750s, T610's sold and ALL owners partaking in such a venture.
Can you NOW see the $$$ Expense SE would have to do to satisfy even just 1/4 to 1/2 those user that complain!??
If this reply from SE is official then its WELL within its rights given the LACK of scientific method or even FINANCIAL grasp for a company to accomodate given the user hasnt put forth this kind of effort.

Under no circumstances should it be necessary for customers to go that far to prove something is wrong. Sony Ericsson has received many complaints about this, and that should be enough. You start off yourself by saying you’ve seen it so many times. Take a moment to consider why that is. It doesn’t matter what the cost is. It’s false advertisement. “This phone has a real Sony walkman”. Well, thanks for the info. Now we know what a real Sony walkman is. I expected a lot more for my 480 euro, and I think most people do.
I am a musician, and I know how my own music is supposed to sound: The way it did in the first firmware of the W800. When I heard the hiss in the second firmware, it was so bad I was sure it was a big mistake. Anyone can make a mistake. So being the patient type, I just waited for the next firmware to come so I could get back the good sound quality. When I realized they hadn’t fixed it in the third firmware, I figured they were probably too busy. I was still patiently waiting.
Now that I’ve learned they simply do not want to fix it, I am very much disappointed.
Though I didn’t want to at first, I engaged myself in the fix-attempt with the FAR Manager thingy a few hours ago. I copied back the files from the first firmware, and now I’m finally happy with the sound quality again. The difference is huge. I hope for all W810 users (and other CID49 users) that the CID49 will be implemented soon, so it’s not a complete waste of money. I’m not happy that I’ve lived with this poor quality for so many months, and I can certainly understand why people are pissed off.
So easy to fix, that college students did it.
I’m still very much disappointed about Sony Ericsson. At this point that will not change, even if they change their mind about fixing it now. I do think they will wake up at some point, but I also fear it’ll be too late by then. Rumours spread fast, and it seems they’re underestimating the power of the Internet. I’m pretty sure they will regret this decision very much, and when they do I hope they’ll at least fire that ass who’s given Sony Ericsson such a bad name. I feel sad the company as a whole is letting this happen. You would think everyone couldn’t be sleeping at once…

Hi! I agree with mr_lou. As a customer I know when something is right or not. I can easily say:
- Driving my car is not as smooth as my syster's. -> I cannot quantify this!
- This shoes are not as confortable as my old ones'. -> Quantify?
A customer wouldn't need to be an engineer to claim against an electronic product. SE should listen to the customers and investigate, quantify, and solve the problems.
However I also agree in that they have already done so, and probably they decided it was much more expensive to solve this problem than continue investigating in his line-up.

I don’t think it’s that simple in this case, but if we stick with the shoes example, then it’s more like this:
I need new shoes, so I investigate the market. (I do this for some time). I find the shoes I need. They are black, feels nice to wear on MY feet, and are easy to put on/off coz there are no shoelaces. Just what I need for relaxing moments. So I buy them.
Other people buy them too. But they don’t really like the black colour, and they really want to use them for running. So the company changes the shoes, and suddenly I don’t have what I bought.
What happened here (as I see it) is that some people weren’t satisfied with the volume and the distortion. Without thinking about the part who was actually satisfied, Sony Ericsson changed these things, cranking up the volume which results in hiss. So now obviously the other part starts to complain. Apparently at this stage SE believed they couldn’t satisfy everyone, and chose not to try any further. But I really expected more from them.
I suppose you could put it shortly: If you like your phone, do NOT update firmware. I’m just glad I was able to put back the old drivers, so I could get my black comfy shoes back. To me it was also sad that MIDI sound was ruined before. Now I can finally use my W800 for low volumed music again.

It is being speculated that this hiss is a new DRM measure by Sony to plug the analog hole of the headphone jack. The same is true for the lack of a Stereo Bluetooth profile. The W850i has the same hiss. Sony wants to be able to sell music over WAP that cannot be copied off the phone. With the hiss you cannot record (analog) over the headphone jack.
Remember the Sony rootkit.
Waiting for an Apple phone.

They will not fix "hiss" because there's nothing to fix, I have used many W810's and not one have problem it this although I have advice to those complaining about this, sell your phones, buy Nokia or Samsung and buy original walkman device (the one using old tapes), then you will learn what is "hiss", after this you will appreciate more what SE managed to build in their mobile phones.

Did you even read the Wikipedia page? The hiss was introduced in a firmware update by Sony. Try updating your firmware to fix the dropped calls, etc... bugs. The W810i has been tested with over 1% distortion. Over 1%! That is not a music player. It is a voice recorder on old, small analog tapes.

@Blade Runner: The hiss thingy is mostly encountered after a f/w upgrade. Lots of people, including me, have noticed it, esp at low volumes. Still, i would like to believe that it will have a solution, eg FAR, maybe, or maybe SE will hit upon some solution!
@ dicen: U plannin to sue 'em SE fellas?

The firm I work for is, yes. They already have quite a few Sony Battery cases. Sony owns 50% of SE. There are a number of things that Sony has done against the consumer that shows a pattern of behavior. CDs with rootkits, selling faulty batteries that were suppose to prematurely wear out (not explode), etc... Kind of like selling tires that are only suppose to last 10k miles but just happen to fail instead.

Hi all ! Just read a response from Sony Ericsson Developer site that the hiss noise on W810 will be fixed in a future firmware upgrade "probably before December".
This is the link;

So i guess there is hope after all !
