@AbuBasim

Sorry but your quote of

"FYI! A friend of a friend told me that this is why the firmware update has been delayed until January. SE is struggling to make GPS work as a software-only solution!"

Makes absolutely no sense at all lots of people both here and on other Forums have numerous SatNav software solutions working on their UIQ3 devices and you really think SE would hold back a range of improvements if available for the sake of GPS!!

@Dogmann:

You didn't see the at the end of my post? It would take some mighty fine programming to produce a software-only GPS receiver. If it was possible, it would probably run on any UIQ3 device, and later be backported to the Series 60 platform . . . imagine that: built-in GPS on a Nokia 6600.

SE should be working on making their p990i work like a star instead of a chump... and not worry about GPS

This is the quote that got me thinking what I was...
"The new "E-911" (for "Enhanced-911") standard, which mandates that 911 wireless callers can be located within 50 meters (328 feet), goes into effect in October. Not all cellular customers will be covered right away. Some companies are using solutions that will require callers to buy a new phone. Others are adopting an approach that will let them track existing customers' locations"

Then I looked at the date of the article, and saw this was written back in 2001!!! Man am I reading the wrong news!!! I found it through a search about GPS and cell phones.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin[....]BU155366.DTL&type=tech_article

Another article that made me think all cell phones had GPS... again, i 'cruised' through it, didn't read super carefully.
http://www.compukiss.com/popu[....]tech_gadgetshtm/article691.htm

and
http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2002/cellphone-0206.html

These articles after more careful reading, don't exactly say it will be GPS... i guess my brain was filling that it for me.

I really should have got my facts a little more straight... but either way, I think it makes for a valid discussion.

There are a couple of phones which have GPS...

I believe a Motorola model, but in fact only has AGPS, which is actually the triangulation between transmitters..

One phone which definately has true GPS is the Siemens SXG75, and uses downloadable maps.. nice phone by all accounts.. if you can find one.

I was considering buying this phone as a replacement for my SX1, but I have never been able to find one... once the P990i arrived on the scene, I changed my mind, and waited for that to go on sale..

Now I have an external sat receiver, and Tomtom6 on the P990i..... couldn't be happier..

Einst,
yea, i use Tomtom on P990 & Holox 32 GPS in my pocket for on foot outdoor use, works like a charm. also when route planning indoors the GPS goes near the window & the phone can be where i want it within BT range i think seperates are more flexable.

I read that GPS is supposed to be in all new cell phones now... so when can we as consumers expect to see usable GPS in Sony Ericsson phones? Namely the P series? I read online that all new cell phones are supposed to be able to be located for 911 reasons... so they will have GPS in them... i suppose not all of these phones will be usable as personal GPS units... but surely the P series will be.

Any way, I was just wondering if there is any word, or buzz, from Sony about when to expect to see P series phones with built in GPS.

They are talking about tracking people down and not the gps you expect like tom tom, its for government use only.
