in nokia, when the light sensor isnt needed cos its day, then the keypad is more bright, in the evening the opposite happens. very clever feature

To elaborate on that slightly. It is a light sensor, when it gets dark the screen dims and when it get lighter it increases the brightness to make the screen easier to see in sunlight.
hey jcwhite_uk, i'm not entirely sure since i don't own a w850, but wouldn't it make more sense that, in the morning where there's more light, the screen goes dimmer to save battery life, and when it gets dark, the screen goes brighter.?? Once again, I can be wrong, but I've heard other w850 users post a similar idea

The light sensor dims the screen in hte dark as it needn't be as bright and puts the brightness up so that the screen can be seen clearer with light shining on it.

exactly what I was going to say. Just I'm not sure about whether they do do this, but from what I've heard Nokia's phones that feature a light-sensor do it wrong

is in the day when the screen needs to be brighter, turn the keypad brightness down. And when it gets darker, turn the screen brightness down, keypad up
