Edge should be a default feature in the fones. Its great at streaming as well and mentioned before in 3g aereas its a very useful help if it is.

Imagine using HSDPA at 1.8MB/s then dropping to 34kb!!
Obviously assuming

makes a HSDPA handset without EDGE.

@BobaFett
I have a question for you, or for anyone for that matter.
If a GSM handset has both EDGE and 3G will it always use fastest available method of data transfer when downloading for example?
Also, with more and more 3G networks appearing, won't EDGE eventually be phased out?

Edge and 3g is the perfect combination,see former posts here. 3g isnt offered in so many countries and the coverage is different, so edge isnt outdated yet imo

EDGE is different to 3G in that it works on a GSM network, so until GSM phases out, EDGE will be in demand!
What I like about EDGE right now, is that apart from Nokio users its an empty highway for data, 200kb/s is easily reachable.

Well, with only one provider in Aus with EDGE, it's kinda pointless for me, especially with our nationwide 3.5G network on the same network with EDGE.
But SE's getting into using EDGE. Mos of their new (and rumoured) phones are getting EDGE, like the K770, and even the low end Z310.

It is all relative. If SE has five out of forty, that is the same as fifty out of fourhundred.

My take on this is that a lifespan of a handset is 2 years, so therefore all non 3G handsets should have at least be EDGE compatible!
HSDPA is taking a while to come out in phones. We have HSDPA for almost 6 months now and only 2 handsets (that I know of) support it, the HTC TYTN and the Samsung ZV50.
