P990 can't handle a 4 GB memory card. I have the same problem as you. When I take out the memory card, or insert a smaller memory card, it works fine. Bug!!!

I've ordered an original 4 Gb card from Sony and will report how it works.
I have to admit to previously buying a counterfeit 2 Gb Sony card. Those fraudsters sure made the card and packaign VERY similar to the original.
