I have the exact problem. But i have found the cause. Well i think i do.
If you have too many contacts, most like the contacts at the end or saved the last will not play the personalize ringtones. Only the ppl who are saved in the contacts list first will work. I have about 300+ contacts and only the personalize contacts work till my friends whos name are the letter "M".
But when you try to delete your entire contact list, and just maybe put in 3 contacts. If you set all of them to personalize ringtones, it will work.
Maybe you can try to save the names of ppl who you want to use personalize ringtones first, then add on the rest of the contacts. Ive not tried it but if anyone has please let me know.
Is there any solution for this yet? Anybody?

Since many people, like myself, never has experienced this problem, and some people sees it all the time, it may be hardware or firmware malfunction on the phone, but it may also be a malfunction in the operator's caller ID function. If the caller ID function does not report the correct number, it does not match any number in your phonebook, and thus, the phone will play the default ringtone. The next time this happens, take notice of what is displayed in the phone. If the
name of your friend is displayed, the number is recognised, otherwise not. In that case, the calling number should be displayed, and also appear in the call list afterwards. If you use that number and store it, as displayed, in your contacts list, it will be recognised the next time the owner calls.
