I had the same problem & thought of returning the phone. I got around it by washing my hands with soap & then thourougly drying them with a towel & immediately trying to open the cover & it worked. After a while you get the hang of it & the cover loosens too. I think something about the gloss on the cover makes it too slipery for some of us, especially if you have slightly sweaty palms. As for the creaking that just goes away after a while, mine creaked awfully flrst week or so, but now it doesn't, I guess after holding it for sometime it becomes a bit more solid or something.
