Actually the p990i is a 2005 model. That's when it was announced. Unfortunately there were so many delays that when it finally made an appearance it seemed like it came out last year. It's too old to compare it to this iphone.

well said, lets all wait and see what se unveil before casting aspersions!
Also!! if se with their wealth of experience in manufacture of mobile phones can make mistakes! what road lies ahead for apples 1st step into the mobile world? i myself think the iphone looks excellent and wouldn't mind having the phone myself, but what problems will the buyers inherit with this phone!

iDon't have too much faith in this iPhone. it shows a pretty face, that's for certain, but they're new in the business and we will have to wait for the real players to make their moves. I dunno, maybe Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Moto, Samsung and LG have been a little shy until now and this will make them wake up and take a bigger step ahead. Let's face it, the iPhone looks pretty cool and has cool features, but it's not like something the big players can't do. Let's wait...

to be honest i dont think that the iphone and the p990 are even similar. they are targeted at totally different markets.
if you were to compare to an SE model then surely it should be the w950? then really all your asking is would you rather have a keypad, symbian, 3rd pary software, 3g and walkman branding or a camera and ipod branding?
i actually think the w950 is the better product and its already available

The P990I wins from the start, It runs TomTom, the iPhone never will. I don't want to use Google maps paying for 2.5g data speeds just to read text based directions.
You can't download music over the air to the iPhone either, have to use a PC or Mac for that!!! I can with my service provider now though at 3G speeds if I want.
And this is tech from last year, we'll have Bravia hires screens by the time the iPhone is launched so lets not compare now as mentioned above.

Well, i think it would have been better if SE were to have incorportaed the 802.11g wireless interface rather than 802.11a which is much slower, however the iphone is restricted as far as software is concerned, and basically having good hardware is no use if u have crap/uncustomizable software. Maybe if someone could come up with an iphone hack and make use of the hardware than it could be brought up for competition, but in the mean time, even tho the p990 has lots of catching up to do, it is still a thing of the past, and i think SE have learnt a valuable lesson from it.

lol at the p990.. even nokia's e61 took it to school.....(in browsing (safari

, video playback, app support and stability.)
here's to hoping the new m600i and w950 coming up from se have addressed all the horrid UI issues currently in UIQ....
guys UIQ is in a sad state right now...(flamesuit on) might be the growing pains of going into the smartphone market full tilt. (they've got a solid footing ad growth in the midrange but face reality)
UIQ=horrid memory management, slow, laggy and unstable... UIQ requires too much mix and match of scrolling and touching the scrolling and just doesn't seem as polished and detail oriented like SE's regular phone line up.
too many of you guys are focused on hardware.. software is what makes these things run properly and that's the issue with UIQ.. the software is too weak

Well the iPhone isn't actually a smartphone anyway. It doesn't have much support for its OS application wise either for the business market.
Also, its camera is worse (no AF and flash, no competition), no doubt horrible battery life, no real keys, no one handed use, no 3G, no removable battery, and no card slot.
The iPhone isn't meant to target the types of people that the P990 is. The iPhone is stylish and slim, but that's for fashion freaks, not tech savvy users.
