Yes if software is needed the community will make one, it's true, but this is true of windows too. It may not be open source itself, but there is lots of freeware and even open source software available for Windows. A prime example is My Phone Explorer.
Likewise with PocketPC, there is are many many developers working on PocketPC stuff. Apples closed loop development and licencing will not be conducive to a wide variety of "widgets" as they call them being available. I would much rather a pocketpc phone than the iphone for that reason alone.
And to say iphone is hackable, well yes of course. I could also hack windows 95 onto a pocketpc (it's possible and it's been done), but the average joe in the market doesn't want to know about hacking, they just want to buy the phone and use it out of the box.
I also wonder if iphone will be that easily hackable anyway, or even if it runs the same os. Many devices run Windows XP, but you wouldn't recognise it. I doubt you will have shell access on the iphone, and surely they will have a few rings of encryption protecting the os from fiddling?

haha classic, but I'm sure the apple people will say it took Apple to popularise it, therefore it's still kudos to Apple. But of course if Micrsoft had got to it first, they'd say they Microsoft had stolen the idea!

I am all for the iPhone, I think its the best thing to happen in a long time.
The reason why is, if this product from Apple - innovative or not - forces OEMs to rethink their offerings to us then that can only be a good thing right?
I would like to see what,

Nokia etc come up with in a years time. More choice for the consumer is good.
