Don't you have to buy a minimum top up with the phones though.

It purely depends on the phone. Usually depending on stock levels, generic stock is quite often available on T-Mobile and less often (but still a significant amount) on Orange. One of my mates got a generic w850 on T-Mobile at the weekend for instance.

What you might find however is if there is branded stock available , that can only be used first. The other thing is networks may be offering incentives/commission on the branded stock. As 99% of people won't even notice the branding the generic stock gets earmarked for O2/Voda rather than using on another network (orange/t-mob) they have specific stock for.

Pay & Go is the exception, most of the time T-Mobile, Orange and increasingly virgin will at least be locked, if not branded. Occasionally generic stock is available but on a far lower basis than contract.

All you can do is ask, if it's available most sales consultants will be happy to oblige (even if an incentive is running, it's better than loosing the sale after all) but remember, just because the system lets them sell generic stock one day, doesn't mean they can the next. Its all at the whim of head office (and no, the store can't get it changed!)

CPW has changed their policy very recently. I bought my K800i there, hoping to get an unbranded version, and guess what, they said they have to install T-Mobile software on all their phones that they sell under T-Mobile, even the sim free ones. The phones woudl be unlocked, and generic, but have T-Mobile software on it.. grrrrr...

Apparently, they have lost the Vodaphone Contract Sales, so T-Mobile have now insisted on having their software put on.

So I have ended up getting a "generic" unbranded (physically) and unlocked K800i, with T-Mobile Software, with a *much* older firmware, though new phone (double grrr).

Quick trip to Wotan Server, and the phone now is "back" with generic software.
