Networks like 3 and Vodafone dont charge you for browsing their own portal but as soon as you browse other sites its then where it becomes a rip off.
I always found that Vodafone live had everything I needed a rarley left their portal. O2 charges you for being in their portal, and its a complete waste of space anyway
Its impossible to be careful with O2, since theres no way to find out how much you have used until a full month after you have used it, its only then you are charged for the usage. So just when you think you've got a nice cheap bill, little do you know that a month later you will have a whopper of a bill on the way.
When you consider the charges of broadband I fail to see why GPRS is so expensivel.

I was gonna make this a new thread, but since you all moved on to other networks, here goes: vodafone ireland on ready-to-go charge 2cent/kb gprs outside vodafone live, BUT... With new Nokia handsets you are given various access points incl. Vodafone isp... Thanks to nokia's settings wizard, that is. So if you have a nokia, vodafone let you use voda. iSP at €2.oo/mb - 0.2cent/kb... A tenth! But only on Nokia handsets... how is that legal (not to mention fair competition... Anyone using the mobile net a lot is hardly gonna buy a SE/motorola and so on). as a matter of fact, even on an expensive contract they charge €3/mb... is that just Irish or do they get away with that in UK as well?

Hi all,
I really don't understand why anyone that intends to use Mobile Data would be with any other Network than T-Mobile or now 3. Both of these companies IMO have made using Mobile Data a reasonable expense as for a max £10 per month with T-Mobile you can use up to 3GB and even use your device as a modem with a Computer. Although there are some restrictions on use this to me is good value. I am not a 3 customer but there new X-Series services do also look to be good value. As now it is easy to port your existing number i can see no reason to continue with a rip off Network. In fact if you need/ want to use Mobile Data it is even cost effective to reduce your current contract to the minimum and just take a new contract get a free phone and sell it to help offset the cost.

What makes me laugh is the constant comments from the industry analysts saying that "the mobile web isn't taking off, probably due to lack of content" when the actual truth is its not taking off because everyone knows they will be paying rip-off prices to access the web from their phone.
I guarantee if it was priced more fairly, it would be getting used a hell of a lot more!

Hello its me again who started this. I have just been reading Mobile Choice magazine and it says on pay and go and contract Orange is 4 pound per megabyte outside your allowances T Mobile and Vodafone are 7.50 per megabyte outside of your allowances too. Now when you put that next to Broadband charges per month of 15 pounds or so its really a no brainer. Totally not right. I mean its even in the Sunday Mirror paper today again about the Goverment are putting pressure on the networks again to reduce call charges abroad. Now how many times do we keep hearing that saying things will get cheaper. Too many times and nothing really changes much. Crazy.

@Seanyb2
Whilst i get and agree your logic on costs they hold no value, you can not compare broadband running over a fixed line Network to costs incurred over a wireless network. If anything this Government is partially to blame and it is them that totally ripped off the Networks over the costs they paid to get their 3G license not counting the cost to the Networks of building and buying the equipment for 3G and they have make these costs back some how.
It also not correct to look at Pay as you Go prices either as these will always be more expensive as the Networks wish to encourage thier customers to sign contracts and be tied to them. I also have to disagree with the prices you have quoted as T-Mobile introduced a fix maximum of £1 per day for Data use for non contract customers.
At the end of the day you used 02's data service without checking how much it was going to cost this is not 02's fault but yours. If as you insist you are not going to pay them they will pass this to a debt collection agency which will rapidly escalate the cost's and eventually result in a CCJ against you. This will then effect your credit rating for a minimum of 6 years or until paid and even then will remain on your credit file for 6 years. This will effect your ability to open a bank account or get any form of credit or Mortgage. If i was you i would attempt to reach an amicable resolution with 02 and get them to reduce these charges as much as possible. It's like you having a BT home line and dialling 090 premium rate numbers say for Football or whatever and running up a bill for several hundred £££'s and saying sorry i didn't realise it would cost that much the responsibility for checking the costs is yours. Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but this is the way of the world you need to take responsibility for your actions as no one else is responsible for them but you.

For Simon N on O2. Yes no one forced me to run up that bill but because O2s systems are so prehistoric i was happily browsing away and for a whole month i was checking my bill on line and only 3 days before my bill arrived the GPRS charges suddenly appeared. Nothing was there whilst i was checking during the month as their systems are so poorly behind you can never keep track of costs and know when to stop. Also when i recieved my bill for the following month O2 very kindly put another 137 pounds of GPRS charges from the last month which was late coming through on my followig months bill even though it was run up during the previous billing period. Lol can you fathom all that out mate. But you surely you can understand how hard it is to keep track. Also since the early days when O2 had no systems in place to charge for GPRS now they have its just let the charges go off the rails without thinking of cost to customers and putting some sort of cost affective pricing in place. Not good.

Yes I can see they are archaic in their billing...I have used this to my avantage several times and have just received 2 free phones via the loophole in thier website (see another thread).
However your phone should have a data counter and using that is sufficient in calculating costs and tbh if you spend a long time using the web on a phone its kinda obvious you are going to need to pay for it.
I personally would like the ability to set a max monthly data usage and then have to physically ask if I wish to go over this....it might stop people using huge amounts then complaining.
As said a few posts previous though; you cant use a service then play dumb to the costs.

If you are a heavy user of GPRS maybe you should look at purchasing one of O2's data tariffs:
http://www.o2.co.uk/mobilestariffs/tariffs/datatariffs/
They are pretty rubbish (unless you are business customer) but better than the £2 per megabyte charge you pay without them!

Yes i agree maybe it was over used but what confused me is my bill always said Inclusive Browse and Download anyway i am reluctantly paying off the remainder of my contract though i will never get one again its always just too easy to run up a big bill however you use your phone i think and i am a heavy user on all fronts. Going to buy a nice new phone soon on pre pay as my main phone though it will probably be Vodafone pre pay as its the best value for calls and texts on pre pay and then just use my t mobile pre pay phone for web use. That sounds controlled i think.
