Firmware: The software that runs the phone"s hardware. It can reside on flash memory in the phone. When you upgrade the firmware with new one, then the flash memory gets rewritten. Hence the term flashing.

Not exactly.
debrand = remove provider's special features, like menus and wallpaper, from device.
unlock = allow phone to work with any operator's sim card.
It's just that most debranders also unlock. Some automatically, others only when you ask.

While we're at it:
firmware = the operating software controlling these (and all other) features on the device.
flashing = the usual process of changing the firmware (usually stored in something called flash memory.

And, just to complete the confusion: Some flashes debrand, some unlock, some do both, and some neither.

By the way, your questions are fine. There's nothing stupid about them.
