Not exactly.
debrand = remove provider's special features, like menus and wallpaper, from device.
unlock = allow phone to work with any operator's sim card.
It's just that most debranders also unlock. Some automatically, others only when you ask.
While we're at it:
firmware = the operating software controlling these (and all other) features on the device.
flashing = the usual process of changing the firmware (usually stored in something called flash memory.
And, just to complete the confusion: Some flashes debrand, some unlock, some do both, and some neither.
By the way, your questions are fine. There's nothing stupid about them.
