yep, not to mention cisco's suite over the name "iphone".
Carkitter, THANK YOU for mentioning that Apple do indeed copy stuff all the time (unlike many apple fanboys who think only Microsoft are guilty of that)

@sloopJohnB
No saying Apple has based the iPhone on that. Just that

may have patented the idea for the rotating display.

Sony Ericsson will have a phone that will have the orientation sensors in one of their phones before the iPhone is available in Europe. This is a certainty.

Interesting!
Will it also have a touch screen? Word is that touch-screen will be big in 2007.

yes, if it has auto rotation, it will be a touchscreen (thought the feature may trickle down to hardscreens as well).
I tend to agree SE will have such a thing before iPhone is available. Probably other manufacturers will too. But if they do you can gaurantee it's because Apple popularised it without even having a phone to market.
Not to Apple's credit mind you, but just the impetus of having a big manufacturer like apple announce something like this, is enough for other manufacturers to want to provide a competing product. Nokia and HTC will also do something similar to iphone in my view.
As they say, competition improves the blood...
