Ares, on the internet there are some collection of Nokia tones, packed in that format. I think that's how they're stored in Nokia phones, there's no one converting them to raw .aac just for fun.

Excellent! That's good news, since Nokia Audio Manager encrypted the .aac files on the 5510. Good to see they haven't maintained that bull with more recent phones.
Not all players will play .aac, for example MP3/WMA players without AAC support etc. Also, as you discovered SE phones that support AAC need it to be encapsulated in mp4 or 3gp.

Will the k800 play all the aac formats if the file is put in a container the k800 can 'understand'? in particular the (aac++) they have so many names for aac this days. wma is quite good (on my cell at least) althou the latest aac incarnation sounds a tad better at the same bitrate. I think all the older aac formats are worse then wma.

Not all Nokia's aac tunes are playable, it looks that some few of them have different bit rates that (k800) suffers. Just a few anyway , in that case I simply go for a real format conversion.
