I agree, the market is seriously deteriorating and the "promises" are becoming rediculous, I hate to see where the industry is going, it's a shame.

After spending 5 years in Orange customer services dealing with the type of incidents listed above I have to agree that a great many dealers are more than willing to lie to gain a commission, CPW was usually one the better ones but certainly had a good proportion of complaints. It was the smaller single stores or small chains that where the worst. A customer losing £600 because of a dealer was something discussed on aregular basis, worst I saw was about £1800 on a family account that had 8 handsets on and they where then given another 8 handsets as spares but they where told that they were pay as you go not contract on£40 a month.

I have found recently in my dealings with CPW that they alwant to sell you what is better for THEM rather than what YOU really want.

I ended up buying my P990i from the O2 store on the contract I wanted and the price I was willing to pay. The CPW deal was more expensive for the handset, and 18 months instead of 12.

The only thing that swayed me towards CPW was the "unbranded" handset they told me they had. Can you imagine how pissed off I would have been to buy it and then find it had the O2 CDA on it.

The guy in the O2 shop was very helpful, and actually made sure I was 100% happy with everything before I left the store. The O2 branding was OK, but a little trip to KulanKendi's server has made the phone even better.

Happy days .......

To give you another little bit of insight. Orange have just completely restructured thei commison, so now they have done away with what was called a "High Commision Handset", basically a handset which Orange had in massive abundance, and were looking to ship out loads of, so they doubled the commission for the salesman should he sell that handset.

This meant that everyone who cam in was pushed toward this handset, whether it was best for them or not. Subsequently due to the restructure there is no longer any handset worth more than another so the consumer benefits, as salesmen are now actually selling customers what is best for them.

I know that the same kind of High Margin Handet or Incentive happens with other SP's and 3rd parties dependant upon which handset they have a lot of, so it's always best to know exactly what you want, and what deal you want it on before entering ANY shop.

From my experience there are several types of salesperson:
1. The type that will tell you what they think will sell you the phone that they want to sell, whether it is a lie or not.
2. The type that dont actually know what they are talking about so make it up as they go along, not really intending to lie to the customer but more not wanting to appear thick.
3. The type that if they dont know something will say they dont and will then find out the correct answer, will tell you the truth and sell you what is correct for you.

I have been in sales myself (not mobiles) and was type 3 and did alright as I got repeat ciustomers as I kept the customer happy. I have also worked with type 1 and 2 sales people and they have been ok at sales but didnt get the repeat customers.
I also never buy from someone who I know has lied to me.
I must admit to dealing with my local CPW a bit as I have never been lied to and they are always helpful. (no I dont work for them)

the silliest case i have seen is when i was lookin to £ a new wi-fi enabled set i unfourtunately wandered into a link store to be told by the staff member that the (mda if i remember right) has wifi enabled, i asked them to show me it working or for another staff member to verify this, they couldnt as it was not wifi compatible, yet if i wasnt so persisitent in seeing the facts they would have quite easily let me leave store with a handset not having the only spec i asked for,,,this as an example of lack of knowledge and imo a 'need' to sell whatever handset to any customer, regardless of its purpose..(this is capitalism at it worst)
yet as the same store i gained a £180 discount on a 12mth(£35 pcm)which for me was pretty close to the profit margin, when i returned to store next week to get same contract offer with friend was told by other staff member that what i was given couldnot be repeated at i was done at a loss to store.
