How would you listen to music if your ipod broke (I guess ipod is breakable as any other device) ?

That's why you buy more than one, say a Video and a Nano

My point was, you break a multifunction device (e.g. phone), you lose all of those functions (phone, music, etc.). My iPod breaks - I still have a phone.

Ipod or acme-mp3... Convergence of phone and musicplayer to me makes a lot of sense when you like music: phone stops playing music when you have an incoming call - with the right headphones you can answer while phone stays in your pocket . You end call, song continues! How do you hear your phone with the i-pod blaring? Vibrate? Ha - if you squeeze the phone up your bum maybe, but in a loose pocket etcetc... And re. what when phone breaks: when your phone breaks and you really rely on it you're screwed either way... When your phone breaks and your main concern is the music player, you don't deserve anything other than a nokia 1600 anyways... And yeah, the nanocliponthingy's oh so cute and a great small-is-great argument, but if it's so great, why not have phones without fancy screens? Oh, now you say, but the 60gb i-pod? Any serious music fan will live quite happily with "only" 300 - 1000 songs on a good music-player: we choose our playlists carefully, can't stand clutter, don't just drag'n'drop NOW-that's what-cowell-calls-music... h*ll, you can buy "preloaded i-pods", books with what to put on your i-pod, etc. Etc... I've been in bands for 20+ years, produced prof'ly... I-pods are music's barbie - when your bored you buy the latest dress-pack, and it don't matter that barbie's a skinny, unflexible fashion-whore..."it's Barb-I-doll"!.

Good post!

I think the main point here is music on the go.

People's knees don't start knocking with fright and they don't go white as a sheet at the idea that, "ooooooo, but if my phone breaks I won't be able to listen to music". If you thought anything was gonna break you wouldn't buy it in the first place now would you?

The average person buying a music-phone will be happy as long as the UI is clear and it shows you what tune is on - after all if you have your playlist set up then the player will spend most of its time in your pocket right?

Disc2phone works - it gets the music onto the phone.

So what it boils down to is will slim, light music-phones muscle in on iPod's territory and the answer is yes although there is plenty of cake to go around for both.

The success of the music-phone is riding on the back of the success of the iPod as the W880i would probably not exist if the iPod didn't dominate the portable music player market, so no doubt SE will still sell millions, plus if even more slim Walkman phones are in the pipeline then the assault will continue this year and beyond; how much of each others sales they'll capture, well only time will tell.

Sony Ericsson is marketing phone very agressively at the moment with a good, strong, colourlful campaign; hardly a day goes by when I don't see a Walkman ad consisting of a W850 and a pair of headphones bent in to the outline of some music-diva. So they definitely are out to secure their market.

Until i can put all of my 65bg of music on my phone, along with a really easy to use music interface, i'll stick with my iPod and seperate phone i think.

yes for day to day usage, you cant beat a walkman phone, my W900i has served me well over the last year or so.

the only time i use my 20gb sony walkman HDD is for holidays and long trips. i have around 40gb of music but never need to have all of it at once!!!

id say in this case the W880 is the perfect alternative to carrying separate 3g phone and ipod nano...

Well, personal preferences aside, as long as there is a fashion for listening to music and radio on the move then there will be a demand for portable music players - thats not difficult to imagine.

Its a fashion thats been around since the days of the original Sony Cassette Walkman 3 decades ago so its hardly gonna dissipate any time soon.

Even the network operators are agressively pushing their own music-download services; t-mobile has recently been pushing their's in a big way; coinciding with the launch of the W880i so the operators are 100% behind devices that can allow people to purchase music instantly and download it quickly, and this is a trend thats going can only grow.

I have an iPod and a w810. The iPod sure is not to go away, its capacity, sound quality and versatility (connecting to car stereo, home stereo) is unsurpassed.

However, I have a selection of music on the w810, the 'heavy rotation'. I use it when I expect calls or do not want to carry around two devices.

With iTunes Agent the syncing between itunes and w810 is a breeze, save for protected songs of course.

As long as memory is so expensive for walkman phones, they'll compete only with the shuffle and nano versions.
