I had the same scenario happen to my P990 last Friday. I also have a Hong Kong model but live in the US. I called Sony support and was issued a Return Authorization number and the mailing address where my phone should be sent for repair.

Here's what I suggest:

-Remove the battery and look for a 5 digit value on the (##W##) where the #'s are numbers. This will tell you the date the phone was manufactured. For example, mine says 06W32 which means it was manufactured Week 32, 2006.

--The warranty period will expire 1 year after this date and Sony support will ask you for it when you call.

--If your phone is still under warranty, call Sony support (1800 11 1800 India Toll free number) , explain what happened and you should be instructed to return the phone to an authorized Sony support center. When they do this, make sure to obtain the Return Authorization number (RA#). They should then e-mail the RA# along with the mailing address of where the phone should be sent to.

--If the address is different from your local support center, take or mail the phone in for repairs. If the address is the same, take your phone along with your e-mail from Sony support and request repair.

--The fact that your phone is from Hong Kong is irrelevant as the warranty is a 1 year international warranty and should be honored by any legitimate authorized SE service center.

Good luck!

Hi,

the Kulankendi site claims support for updating the P990i. I have used kulankendi in the past (for a Z610, I have never used it for a P990).

Kulankendi is slow (usually takes a couple of days to get the credits you order) and not so user friendly.

However if you are careful, read the manual, double check everything and follow the instructions, it should work fine.

So far I have not seen P990 support from Wotan or DaVinci Team (or have I missed something there ?).

@sudhakarvytl:

So why did the SE repair center change their mind and fix your P990 when they initially told you it was not under warranty because it was manufactured in Hong Kong? Or did you go to a different repair center?

I just received my P990 today from the SE repair center in the US--it only took 10 days (not too bad). However, instead of repairing it, they REPLACED it.

No complaints on my end...just trying to determine if I should put the new P990 back in the box and sell it when the Nokia E90 is launched?

I have a similar problem.. I got the phone in France, the SE service center here refuses to service it here in Bangalore, India. I have a crippling problem with my P990. Everything in the phone, except for the GSM logon!! It just keeps showing "Searching" in the standby screen, and doesn't detect any network at all.. Reflashed and tried everything, nothing works. If I get a RA number, then it'll be a god send. Has this worked for anyone?

Did you call SE support (see my previous post for their support telephone number in India)? If so, what did they say?

Sorry to hear that. If your phone still connects to seus try the recovery option.
