hi
i have a sony w850i a 30gb video ipod and a Sony NW-HD5 which in this months stuff magazine was named the best ever mp3 player by one of the writers.
Although the sound on the w850i is good you cant compare it to the sound quality in the NW-HD5 it also has 40hours battery life and looked excellent. When it came out it was the loudest mp3 player around .
The video ipod does have a good sound is possibly the best looking mp3 now and the inclusion of video is a bonus and according to this months ipod user magazine they sold 6.5million in three months so cant be all bad

I had a Sony flash player and my K800i sounded better using the same track and headphones though volume control isn't good on the K800i and theres no playmode selector.

This is my observation.

In terms of sound quality and provided that you're using the same headphone and the same mp3 file (with proper encodings of course), both devices will sound about the same. SE music phones have Mega Bass which can quite liven up the music while iPod has its useful 10-bar equalizer (I don't have a phone w/ Walkman 2.0 but I assume it's still using that basic 5-bar equalizer?).

In terms of UI though, iPod completely smokes SE's one. There is not even a competition to talk about here. iTunes is also miles more superior than the joke that is D2P.

So my verdict is, stick to the iPod if you're a serious audiophile but otherwise, the musicphone may be a viable choice if you plan to buy a new phone and happen to need a somewhat basic music player. Otherwise, SE needs to revamp the UI to compete evenly with the iPod.

Let's be honest - there's no-way that an SE Walkman phone has better sound than a high end IPOD or Iriver MP3 player when it comes to max volume and BASS. But, in my opinion they come pretty dam close and are definitely on par or better than most MP3 players. When it comes to max volume there really isn't that much in it. My W800 has more than enough max volume to make my ears ring. And when I compare the volume to that of the Irivers (clix and E10) my children have - there isn't much difference - But, bass is better on the Iriver. However, I'd much rather have my W800 (or any other walkman phone) as it is a true multimedia device. A walkman phone has definite benefits over an MP3 player. i.e. great battery life (better than most MP3 players), a decent camera, java games, Radio, no need to use proprietary software to transfer songs and a built in speaker - And, all this is tied into a mobile phone. This has to beat lugging around several devices.

hi i partially agree with you there but only becuase you have w800i firmwire which is a dissapointment. The w800i tends to distort on the 9th volume bar although its still more refined than a pod. Try the other se phones you would be amazed by the huge difference.

Good thing you can customize the acoustic pack to improve the sound quality though.

Imho Walkman phones are just a bad joke. I already sold a w850 and w950, because the music quality and the low volume. No camera, because there is a good music player ? (: And what is with that little album art ? Why there aren't a zoom option for it ? Bitrate recognizing ? Se can release good mind-range phones, but not high-ends. I will buy a k750, it has much better music quality than any of my walkman branded phones...

- Sorry, for my bad english :}
