My Norton Internet Security 2007 went and deleted Spybot S&D, annoying. Somehow the two programs don't "get along". Norton does slow down your computer but it does it's job well.

Thanks everyone for your input, it's much appreciated! Looks like I'll try out Spybot (and the other recommendations). With regards to Norton, I have read that it slows down the sytem, but I just (2 weeks ago) downloaded and subscribed for the next year
Anyway, thanks again for the replies

Don't worry, although I don't now I never had compatibility issues between Norton and Spybot, and my computer never really slowed down, at least I didn't notice. I'm sure it'll be fine for the moment, Norton is still excellent at what it does.

@london-uk, there are a few freeware programs I use to keep my laptop running in tip-top condition. I use:
Auslogics Disk Defrag to defragment my hard-disk from time to time. Windows does have a defragmentation tool, but this is faster. I use both, depending on the situation.
CCleaner to clean up any junk that is cluttering up my notebook.
Free Registry Defrag to optimize the system registry.
Hope these help you!

My laptop has been running slowly lately, so I've taken a couple of steps to redress that. Now I'd really appreciate your help/suggestions to get it running smoothly again.
1. I have done the following:
a. Full system scan for virus (using Norton 2007)
b. Full system scan for spy/adware (using Norton 2007, is Norton good enough or do I need a dedicated spy/adware detector?)
c. Defragmented the drive
2. I want to do the following:
a. View and control which programmes run at start-up (I'm running XP SP2). How do I do this?
3. Does anyone have any other suggestions which I could implement, to make my laptop run as fast as it used to.
Thanks for your time, and I appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Get rid of Norton!!!! BIG waste of money and slows down your machine.
Try AntiVir
http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php its free.
Spybot S&D is great too for spyware.
go to Start - Run and enter 'msconfig' this will show u what runs at startup, you cana untick all the realplayer crap etc as its probably just there to monitor what you do. obviously be carefull what you disable tho.
go to taskmanager when you booted up, then check how many processes are running. should be no more than 30-35.

Thanks for all the new suggestions/recommendations, I'll try them out. With some luck (and all you guys help so far) my lappie should be back to its old self. Having only had time to do a couple of the suggestions so far, I've already noticed it's speeding up! Wahey and thanks again

@london-uk, the apps I recommended don't require a lot of time to install or run, so be sure to try them, I'm pretty sure you'd be pleased with the results.
