I got this same request (with which I complied) after flashing a V800 to generic Z800 status through DaVinci Team. Clearly they see the device as a brand new mobile. This also means either the firmware has something in it to request this SMS or our carriers are contacting SE whenever a new mobile is registered to the network.

I also flashed and debranded a W300i this morning and that didn't ask to register the phone, strange!

a couple of recent phones I've had asked this on first startup. I think its something new like the way it now also attempts to download settings automatically too

Debranding and unlocking are two independant things, concerning two different softwares.

If it was the same software, every wotan flash would unlock your phone...

Mine was a complet reflash to generic SE firmware. Phone had been unlocked previously.
