Well it looks like I'm going to find some way to have the housing replaced. Do you think it is a better deal to buy the housing for $80 and try to replace the piece myself (voids warranty), or should I just send it off to SE to repair for $185 (keeps warranty)?

I replaced the housing on a P910a w/o any problems. In fact, it was insultingly simple to do. If you're comfortable taking things apart this should be a snap.

on the next firmware upgrade, crash your p990i by screwing it up during upgrade and send it in.

$185 for a piece of plastic... that's too very much...

since the screws have very fine threads in it, if you put the screw in and tighten it right away with the screw driver and the thread is not aligned properly, that is when this problem will occur because the screw pushes the entire circumference of the hole outwards.. so better to be sure that the threads are matched first before tightening..

..just my 2cents..

to get threads aligned right put screw in place and gently turn the wrong way (anticlockwise) until you feel a light "click" this is the thread lining up correctly, now the screw should be able to be tightened easily without distorting the hole/thread, remember not to overdo it also

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have always been careful to line up the threads, so I don't think this was the problem, but I suppose it's always a possibility. Anyway, I just wanted to mention a couple things.

When I called SE about getting it repaired under warranty, they said that it could only be repaired if the cracks were causing the phone to operate incorrectly. Obviously they weren't. But I recently put the flip back on, and it seems that it is a little loose and so the flip buttons fail from time to time because of the loose connection. So maybe this will be reason enough for them to fix it under warranty. I will call them up tomorrow and hopefully they will honor the warranty.

Again, thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know what SE says in case this happens to anyone else in the future.

I just wanted to post an update for this thread...

I ended up just purchasing a new housing on eBay for about $50. That is a lot cheaper than what SE wanted to do the fix. It was surprisingly easy to switch out the housing, and now my P990 is like brand new all over again!

If anyone is interested, I'll post pictures of before and after, but there's really not all that much to see...
