Well, there definitely are some useful widgets/gadgets for your pc (check yahoo's widgets engine, or opera's desktop browser that comes with the option to add-on/download hundreds of nice small programmes - from fun stuff to really useful mini-programmes)...
For mobiles? Well, I venture the opinion there aren't any widgets for mobiles (maybe opera mobile ( can pull it off, we'll see...).
WIDSETS, in my opinion, do not provide widgests... They let you pile a bunch of java apps into their widsets-application, from where you can start those programmes... Most of those "widgets" are in one form or another available as seperate programmes - or free, better alternatives are available.... The point is: you have to load "widsets", then chose your so-called widget, start that, etc etc... it's like installing any programme in your apps-folder.
And most of those "widgets", well the useful ones anyway, don't do anything that operamini and countless other java apps can't do better!!
That's my opinion, and I find the "hype" some "reviewers" create around widsets totally incomprehensible....
In short: if you call the widsets stuff "widgets" any programme on your phone is a widget, or none of them...

all the podcasts I use come in mp3 format so they should work on almost any phone these days
if you become a regular podcast listener then you might want to use some software on pc or on phone to manage them and let you know when there are updates. I don't know of any such software for SE but Nokia have a podcaster available for some phones. I'm using it on N95 and it works well.
from the little I've done this so far, it looks like sites serve up their content to these types of software in xml format

well, as stated below, there are a few applications for symbian nokias (nokia's own podcast app and audiobay, e.g.) and I believe there are some for other smartphones/windows mobile ppc etc as well. Don't know about any java apps for non-smart-phones, but I never checked!
