i'd have to say the Nokia E61/E61i... looks amazin even in direct sunlight but the phone size etc isnt to everyones liking!!!
Stay away from the LG Shine though... Silver covered screen means reflected light which means its very bad in sunlight!!! i couldnt read mine properly!

the E61 etc is definitly more than she wants though I'd agree, talking generally, the screen is good, but then so is the P990 screen. very bright and easy to read.
the F3 seems to be like L6/L7 but when I had those I thought the screen was not so good.
so far the choice seems to be the d840, shine or the old v3/v3x

Very vauegly similar looks but couldn't be more of a different phone.
The F3 uses an EPD display, basically 'electric ink' so apart from being black and white, it's also extremely easy to read in light conditions, but hard to read in dark ones as it has no backlight. But it uses a trickle ammount of battery.
