Use soft keys + shortcuts,it really helps joystick to last long without problems..

newers models have incorporated dpads. as you can see the k550, w610, w660, w880/8, etc.
however, i use the joystick in my k750 when there's no more option but to use it(to select apps, games, etc)

Though D-Pads are good, and very durable, I have to admit I prefer using joysticks, quicker navigating through menus and selecting things I find, as you don't have to move your finger from the directional D-pad onto the 'select' key, it's all one fluid movement.
Though I do concede they are a bugger when they stop working, and rather than replacing a keypad PCB which is relatively simple, you have to de-solder the old joystick then re-solder a new one on...
Not tried replacing a joystick yet but it looks very tricky!

I've never had joystick problem on my v600 and now it will be 8 months with k800 still no problem, and its a lot easier using joystick but i must confes it depends on how u use it

Maybe SE should start using optical joysticks (D-pad with a joystick extension on top). This would give the comfort of a joystick with the durability of a D-pad.

pesonally i'd prefer joystick, much easier...never experienced faulty joysticks but i've used some d-pad phones, they're pain

I find no problem with

joysticks probuably because I keep the joystick clean
and it looks horrable to have a dirty joystick with the backight on

My wife said she experimented with a D-Pad in college but now she definitely prefers the Joystick.
