I think we do have it good here...despite our moans, but some countries not only rip you off for the handsets, but also the way their tariffs work. Like in the USA, you get your inclusive SMS for example....but it costs you to receive them aswell WTF??

To our usa members here, how does the tariff work, where you have to pay to recieve calls and sms. Do you get an allowance for recieving sms and calls?

During the past, I was really SKEPTICAL if there IS really a FREE phone

But after making some computations . . . there is really a so-called FREE thing

. . . either your CALLS, SMS etc or the FONE . . . at my end, plans/contracts usually BIND you with the local network company for 2 years . . .

!

Read an article on Mobile Today about how handsets for contracts in Sweden are charged for, but as a trade-off the contracts are cheaper, as are the calls. I'll have to see if I can find the article!

O h h h . . and I just forgot to add that I manage to apply for (2) contracts (different networks) . . . been with them for 4 years now . . . but will CUT my ties with them . . . not worth it I guess as I don't fully CONSUME my allowed credits

, will just get a PRE-pay SIM next year . . .

If I'm not wrong, I think in France you even have to pay €1 instead of being able to get the phone free. Can anyone from France confirm this?
I think that applies to Germany too on 02.de

Here in the U.S. you usually get a choice of phones with a new contract. The standard contract is 2 years but now most carriers offer a 1 year contract, though they rarely mention it without substantial prodding. The phones range from free for a real piece of crap up to several hundred $ for the latest hotness. I'm with T-Mobile and here in the states they seem to be the carrier catering to teens and 20-somethngs, the folks most interested in IM and SMS. Big emphasis on SideKicks.
Every plan is different, but generally you don't get any free SMS messages unless it's spelled out in the deal. They may say "20 free text messages per month", but if you're paying $40/month it's really not free now, is it? Data plans usually don't include SMS messages. They sell separate SMS plans including unlimited SMS for up to about $15/month, or they just charge $0.15 each. I usually use 100 or so per month so it's not really worth the unlimited plan. I just pay as I go for now. For a data plan the TZones $5.99/month is the cheapest I've ever seen. I get unlimited data and email and TMo pretty much leaves me alone. If someone were to go buck wild with the data usage they might be told to upgrade to a $20/month unlimited data plan, but for most users they both provide identical service. Every now and they T-Mobile will shut off a service with TZones in a weak attempt to get real data users to upgrade. We all just enter in the proxy server info and that seems to spoof the system enough to get us back our unlimited internet or email. Then TMo gives up and re-opens all the ports again.
The big fear is that T-Mobile will simply stop offering the $5.99 TZones plan so anyone with it usually keeps it even if they switch to a Blackberry data plan. If you lose TZones you might not get it back. TZones is useless with Blackberries as the BB needs a specific plan just for it. If you have a minutes plan already, Blackberry data (unlimited) drops from $30/month to $20/month. Pretty good considering Verizon gets something lilke $50/month for BB data alone!

so it looks like rambo t mobile is offering a specific data option no matter where in the world you have t mobile. so its basically like our web and walk option, where you pay like £7.50 a month for data access.

depends on what plan people choose here. Some you get the phone free, some you have to pay the phone off per month....
