These cars suck. They are consistently at or near the bottom of independent quality and reliability surveys. They're the most expensive to purchase, and have the highest cost-of-ownership, in their respective classes. VW of America and its dealerships threat their customers like garbage.

And then they wonder why they have less than 2% of our market

I'm facing a $2000 repair bill for engine timing. This on a perfectly maintained, unmodified, unraced, unabused Golf VR6 with
"German Engineering" my ass - it's all sauerkraut. No wonder everyone here buys Hondas, Toyotas, and Subarus. I will have to do the same

You didnt abused a VR?? COme on its a 2.8 V6!!! Its a monster!
I even heard that that US VR6 was more powerful than ours, ours was 128Kw US was 135kw!!

I read somewhere that VW in europe were not as reliable as was presumed. People buy VW's for their build quality but in reality they are at least as bad as any other european manufacturer.

Never had any major problems with the VAG cars I've owned (Audi A4,VW Sharan,VW Lupo,SEAT Leon)

All have been great cars with no major problems at all. The My 2000 model VW Lupo was the best out of them all though with no repairs needed in the years I owned it.
The only thing I've had go wrong with my 2002 model SEAT Leon is a coil pack failure and rear silencer replaced.
The Audi A4 was a 1997 model 1.9 TDI and the only problem I had with that was the drivers door wouldn't close properly. Kept popping open.
The the VW Sharan is also a 1.9 TDI and a 2001 model with well over 100,000 miles on the clock and no problems at all.

Well, the good news is, the engine repair should be covered by warranty. Up to and including 2001, VWs came with a 10 year/100k mile powertrain warranty. For the engine, this covers all internally lubricated parts + related parts, such as my timing chain guides. (Of course, electrical parts are excluded!)

The bad news is, VWoA is notorious for finding any reason to deny a warranty claim. I am the original owner, I have all of my maintenance records, and the engine is bone stock, so I should be OK... When they pull off my oil pan next Tuesday, I'll find out for sure - I either have a free repair, or just spent $100s for nothing.

I also need to replace a washer pump (quit this morning) and a glove box lid (latch is self-destructing). Not to mention my wife's New Beetle needs new radio speakers, as two of them gave up the ghost.

Granted, this car is far better in every way than my prior two ('89 Pontiac Bonneville, '96 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme). However, GM and Ford have been making amazing strides in quality and durability over the last few years. Meanwhile, Honda and Toyota still dominate the top of the reliability charts, as they've done for 20 years now. Not to mention these cars all run on 87 octane, which is $0.40/gallon cheaper than the 93 octane my thirsty GTI requires.

@786KBR: Given VWoA's witch hunt against warranty claims, it's a good thing I didn't abuse this motor! Besides, VWs don't like abuse, they they do like to be driven hard. There is a difference.

As for our phones - it's not our fault! The GSM world conference decided to pick every single frequency that was already allocated for non-mobile uses in the US! Read this:

Finally, since quite a few VAG fans have come out here, I have a question for you: Is VAG's styling going downhill? The A4-generation Golf, Bora, and TT were amazing, as were the B5.5 Passat and B6 A4. The A5 Golfs and Boras look like yesterday's Japanese econoboxes, the B6 Passat is a mess, and the B7 A4 and updated TT look like they came from Subaru! Only the R8 has any Teutonic quality. Fortunately, the R8's designer is supposed to now take over all VW design...

I'll stick with my MK1 Leon. MK4 Golf platform with Audi A3 interior and with most of the kit it comes with as standard you would pay more for if you bought a VW or Audi.

Too bad we don't get those here. I used to belong to VWvortex, which would post news from all over VAG. SEAT news was always a treat

Better cars, better phones - damn, I need a job in Europe

I have a Skoda Superb, whic is basicaly a VW Passat but about 10'' longer, leg room in the rear is amazing, performance from the Audi/VW 1.9TDI 130 is staggering. I too am pleased to have a VW/Audi car but wearing a different badge, and the Skoda catch phrase of (Honest it's a Skoda ) is correct, as the amount of times I have had to say more or less the same thing to people, as they never belive it until they see the badge. Since I got mine, my mate and my dad have both bought one as well, as have several other people I know, as they have been so impressed with it. Not only that but like the Seat, it comes as standard with allot of stuff that would be cost options on VW/Audi cars.
